What spark plugs to use on H22A?
What is the best spark plug to use on a japan spec 1995 H22A engine (Type S internals, 11:1 CR) going all motor? I have AEM FPR, fuel rail and walbro 255 lph intank fuel pump. Fuel pressure at idle is between 34-36 psi. I had a set of the platinum plugs they use from factory and these didn't last very long. I got rough idle after a short time and when replaced them with non platinum plugs, the fouling problem went away. Since NGK has the VX platinums, race plugs and many other different models, what is the best way to go? Platinum, race or non-platinum?
When I had my Prelude (god bless it), I used the standard NGK copper plugs, always to my delight... I had the JDM H22A VTEC (200 HP, 161 TQ) ... The plug code is: ZFR6F-11, and they cost around $6-8 at shucks, napa, etc.

I have heard great things about the Iridium plugs such as the Denso Iridiums...I plan on trying them out for myself, as they are supossed to be superior to both platinum and copper.
I'll never stray from NGK again. Despite the fact that I change plugs everytime I change oil doesn't mean anything.
NGK's simpley run the best in my car... period. Others may be different.

I definitely agree with that. Are you using platinum or non platinum? Have you ever tried NGK's racing plugs? Currently, i am using their racing plug # R5671A-7.
I have become hesitant to using platinum because of how fast a brand new set of NGK platinum plugs went bad on my engine. Idle became very rough and just did not run normal. We replaced the plugs with non platinum NGK's and no more problems. What is the issue with honda using platinum plugs on most DOHC engines?
I have heard good things about those Denso Iridiums. I might check them out to find out for myself if they are actually that good.
Regards,
Mark

I hate to do this, but the plug I run is kinda a secret. I had to PRY this from my mechanic at the severe threat of death if I told anyone. I think he burns the damn boxes after he gets them... lolHe used to competitively race SCCA, and it took him 10 years to get that plug number and brand out of HIS OWN BEST FRIEND. ???? I dunno, but I'm taking this one to my grave.

Hey, not my fault. He swings in here on occasion, and if he knew I gave out that number, there goes my frequent breakage discount! And I need that!
NGK platinum- here's a little secret get some spark plug spacer and mark the top side of the spark plug so you can see the spark plug facing the charge (the injector)
Does this Bosch spark plug you mention have a different part number? I have checked locally here in Puerto Rico and cannot get a hold of the part number you mentioned. Are these the inexpensive bosch platinum plugs? Tell me if i am mistaken but does bosch have several different platinum plugs? Their website gives me three different part numbers: 4417-Platinum +4, 4230 Platinum and 7562 Super. Where are the F6DP's?
Well shiat, this is getting out of control. For some strange reason, I just HAD to change my plugs tonight. I really wanted the NGKs but the dealers are closed, so I went to the local Trak Auto (Crap Auto) and picked up those Bosch platinums (2 bucks apiece).
I didn't have the gap specs when I put them in, the NGK plugs coming out (that were in the engine when I had it installed) and the default gap for the Boschs going in were like .041 if I recall correctly.
It idles nice (haven't driven it yet), but based on 99_SH's post my gap is way off? Damn I need to pick up a Prelude service manual.
Hell I'll probably replace them with NGKs tomorrow 'cause I just love playing under the hood...

Do you use Platinum NGK's? The Bosch #F6DP cross references to a NGK platinum #BCP6EVX. Is anyone running this particular NGK plug?

Hey Mark. I just got this engine and this is my first plug change. I just decided to change them 'cause I think the plugs that are in there are the same ones that were in there when I got engine from the salvage yard.
I religiously used NGKs on my old F22 (ZFR5F-11) and most Honda drivers agree that NGK is the way to go.
I think you should definitely get the ZFR6F-11s if you can. I'll probably pick up a set of them tomorrow even though I just put in some Boschs.
I'm quite sure both these NGK plugs aren't platinum... platinum offers no performance gains, only increased longevity, but I replace at 15K max anyways.

i've got the denso iridiums, and yes, they made a difference. the motor felt peppier, less bogging with A/C on. i also run them with 5 hundreths wider gap to expose the flame kernel more with no ill effects.
i've had them in for 10k miles now, and i pulled them, cleaned them off a bit, and checked the gap... not much fouling, if any and the gap was still right on. definitely worth the money, IMO

If you want the stock replacement the PZFR6F-11 is the plug.
If you are running high compression or f/i and want a stock plug thats one step colder the PFR7G-11 is your plug.
If you want one step colder and a race plug that has a narrowed Ground wire your plug is a BKR7EVX-11. It is a NGK VX series Platinum race plug.
With my 11.5 compression set up I ran only the PFR7G-11 or the BKR7EVX-11.
I have tried every other plug made just about, to include the copper NGK's and the NGK platinums stated above netted my best times and overall performed better.
