Default 5 speed LS tranny question

I cracked the case on my 94 ls's 5 speed tranny so we switched the gears out into a different used case. There were two washers (spacers?!) that went under the gear tree I believe, not certain, hope someone else will know!! and we couldn't get them to fit in the new case b/c each time we tried we couldn't get it to go into reverse. FInally without the two spacers we got all 5 gears and reverse. So we put in the tranny and it drives fine for about 5 hours...then all of a sudden I go to shift from 4th to 5th (normal driving, not racing) and it will just grind.....it wont hardly go into any gears now....every once in a while it will go in 1st and drive without grinding.

IS this most likely due to play from those washers being gone? I know the cases are machined together, so if i can't find those spacers is there any way in the world to know what size they were?? I really need some help here....anyone???

You're refering to the two washers that go between the mainshaft and the bearing. One is a flat washer and the other is a spring washer...and yes they absorb shock and occupy space. I'd give the dealer a call and see if you can locate replacements, but it sounds like you may well have already done some damage to your synchros. There are alot of parts in a Honda tranny, but there aren't many you can just leave out because they're not convenient. Good luck bro.

Yes...assuming you shift properly. Top speed will drop somewhat however.

you need the washer and spring to absorb as a dampner, buy new oem honda ones. in the mean time you made have messed up your synchro's. take it a parts and check.
