Default Help! D16a6 problems

I just picked up a 90 CRX Si. The problem is... the motor is supposedly blown. I guess what happened was that somehow... there was severe oil loss and the car died. Oil pan is alright. I don't know the nitty gritty details other than, coolant and oil sprayed all over the engine bay, and the timing belt was torn in half.

I rotated the crank and it was smooth. I'm planning a mini me swap so I'm hoping that the block is alright.... my guess is, the valves are done for due to the timing belt, but I'll be swapping the head anyway... I guess my question is... what caused it all? Could it be a blown head gasket? What should I be looking for to see that the block is usable? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
