Default Speaker Box: treated lumber = bad idea?

i have some JL audio speakers a friend gave me and i decided to make a little box for them so i could have some rear speakers for my beater.

i had some 1/2" plywood sitting in my garage, so i started to make a box out of it. after i finished, my dad came home and told me the wood i used was treated and it gives off some kind of vapors... that's why you're not supposed to make dog houses out of it or build playground equipment out of it.

i was gonna spay paint the box anyways, but i thought that if i give it a few more coats and then maybe some kind of spray sealer, i'd be alright.

what do you guys think? if it's a bad idea, i'll just buy the right wood and build another box.

thanks

I wouldn't worry about it too much, Youre not going to live in your speaker box, so you won't be breathing it too much. just keep your window craked if you leave your car somewhere for a couple days or more.

i'm sure someone here will explain what MDF is...

but whatever u do, get 1/2" MDF for your application. unless u have a W6v2 or a W7 that requires something thicker. but for the most part, 1/2" should do. not to mention u cut down on weight.

Medium Density Fiberboard. It is made of saw dust and glue

Call your local hardware stores/lumber yards and ask for it. It is normally sold in 4x8 sheets, so you may need to have it cut down for you.

dont use plywood for your box, 3/4" mdf is what we use for most boxes that we build at my shop.

you can use partical board if there shitty speakers, but mdf if they are good. Ever seen a plywood box explode....cool to watch, bad if its your car. But most likely it wouldn't do that, just crack and flex. When you crack it, it will sound like crap.

The only plywood you could use is Birch. It's more dense than MDF, about the same as HDF. They make pro audio cabinets with the stuff.
