strippped spark plug hole -- can I fix it with the head on???
one of my plugs rattled loose and shot out today and I can't get a new one to thread in... I assume that it tore the last couple threads, but the hole is too deep to see (1990 accord 2.2L). I was going to try to cut in with a tap but i wondered if shavings would get into the cylinder... Any suggestions on a fix would be really appreciated, Thanks.
That is a great idea, Bill. I cannot believe I did not think of it before.

If a few shavings fall into the cylinder, I would not worry too much about it. You can blow the cylinder out with compressed air and you can crank the engine with the spark plug out. If you do this, most of the shavings will blow out the spark plug hole. After all, it is just aluminum.
Be careful when you tap the hole. You could easily damage the threads beyond repair with a tap (if you do it wrong). A Heli-Coil kit for spark plugs will set you back about $180.00 and it is easy to screw this up, too.

you can either use the grease like bill said, or rub the tap over a magnet a few times to get it magnetized, then the shavings will cling to the tap.
ah...cut the fuel by pulling the ecm fuse, take out all the spark plugs, crank it with the gas panel down the floor, just like how you do a compression test, see if that will blow all the little metal shaving out.

Shavings from an ALUMINUM head will cling to the magnet?
