swapping to a lower final will increase acceleration, at the expense of top speed. i just swapped in a A.T.S. 4.93 final, and am very impressed. it gets off of the line faster, and pulls stronger in each gear. the only down fall is reduced top speed and gas mileage due to increased revs at any given speed. for instance, the stock itr (or99/00 si) revs 4,500 at 80mph. with the A.T.S. it revs 4,900 at 80mph. not that big a difference, at least not to me. i actually swapped out a jdm final for the ats. i don't drive the car that much, and figured i'd use a little less mileage. and i could only manage 8,000rpm the back straight of pocono, and now with my new motor i can rev higher, so i want to take advantage of it. as far as getting the gear from honda, not in the states you can't. best bet is someone like typeRmsm, godspeed, or my friend yasu (www.racingcraft.com) all their prices are similiar. in my opinion, the best single mod you can do that doesn't affect reliability. good luck
I did a search for you. here. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=59050
should be worth .2-.3 in the quarter. Well worth mod. If you can tolerate the revs it makes your car a hell of alot more fun to drive. Hopefully one day I'll do it if I can get a better job with a much more stable company..

IM RatedR (TJ). He's got JDM final drive WITH GS-R 5th gear. This setup should be more tolerable for daily driver. (keep the rpm down at highway speeds.)
TJ - what times are you getting w/ the JDM final drive?

alan chow(ie. the really stressed out one on the phone hahaha)
or ben leung(ie. fastest 2-fingered typist in the world!)
i used to have a 4.785fd from a 98specr in my itr tranny in my old teg. i don't have it in my new itr and i really miss it now that i've driven someone else's itr with it installed (and i hope to correct that soon!). you notice that the car pulls easier and revs more quickly. even better results with a light flywheel.
i've heard of people using fd's approaching 5.0.... i can't imagine what that is like on the highway
ben has changed all the gearsets in his tranny (or will be very soon). i can't remember if it was from spoon or from someone else. you could ask him about it.

Any 1/4 comparisons with your JDM FD vs. ATS FD experience? Does the ATS make the car accelerate much faster than the JDM? How much was the ATS?
Thanks,
Jon
BTW-i remember asking this before, and never getting a response....
Is it possible to take an aftermarket FD like Cusco or ATS and use the GSR fifth gear for the highway RPMs... how would that work out?

Does the JDM final drive really take .2 -.3 seconds off a 1/4 mile time? JDM Type-Rs come with this drive (duh!) and are about 150 lbs lighter than the USDM Type-R, but I don't recall their 1/4 mile times being all that much different from our cars.
that's because the gearing is different as well in the 98specr tranny, not just the fd. i don't have the numbers in front of me though.
