Default heavier bigger rims vs smaller lighter rims..and tires

aren't lower profile tires lighter than regular sized tires?
thus a heavier bigger rim comes with a lighter tires as opposed to a lighter smaller rim with a heavier tire...
doesn't that just make them the same?

No.

The 17'' tires are still heavy as well, and the weight of the wheels is still too much to overcome by trying to find a lightweight tire.

My new wheels and tires weigh more then my steelies.

Old: 14x5.5 18lb steel + 185-60-14
New: 15x6.5 13lb Rotas + 205-50-15

It ends up weighing about 2-3 lbs more then stock.

what would you estimate the weight difference between say
205-50-15
vs
205-40-17

It isn't that much. It's the fact that the rotational mass moves further from the center that effects performance.

btw: Falken Azenis is a very heavy tire!

Also keep in mind that lower profile tires are often wider. So more rubber and steel = more weight.
