If you find other parts, they won't be much cheaper. Maybe $100 less, total.
The piston/rings/rods is an important part of the motor. I wouldn't skimp. Then you can go all out with the motor (NA or FI route...)

Those prices aren't that bad. Crower rods are around $600 a set. Take a look at Jun's prices, $1100 for rods and $1400 for a set of pistons.
Like what was said above, don't go cheap on the important parts. It's better to pay the money now than blow the engine and have to pay for cheaper parts a 2nd time plus a new engine.

I wouldnt even waste my time or money on a ZC like that. Just the pistons cost more then the motor itself. just dont think its worth building up a ZC
Yea, parts are expensive in general. I am building up my zc and then putting a turbo on it. I don't know why people say a zc is a waste of time. I like to be different so I am going to do the zc and see what i can get out of it. And by the way the zc does have potential contrary to popular belief
There is nothing wrong with the ZC, it makes good power and has a good rod to stroke ratio. It likes to rev, and parts for it are relatively cheap. In addition, if you break it... you can replace the entire motor for like $400. I believe the racecar MarkC is involved with ran 30psi on a ZC (stock sleeves) with just JE pistons and crower rods... and netted some 10 sec time slips.

I have the same belifs about the ZC, I did find a gie who will use his business to purchase them at whole sale, again a 150.00 give take 20, but still the end result is well worth the money. Best of yet - no Vtec, power there the whole way up and down the RPM range. Future plans Garrett T04s, P Trim, used ~ Even better.
