Default is it always necessary to hone the block when installing new piston rings?

i'm due for some new oil control rings, and was thinking of tackling it myself. If someone could answer my question as well as offer me any other input when changing the rings i would really appreciate it. thanks

it would be a good idea to hone the block to help break in the rings.

yes you must hone the walls to break up the glaze or the new rings wont seat right

ok that clears that up, but it brings me to my next question. Can the block be honed while mounted in the car, or does the shavings need to be cleaned out meaning the block must be entirely removed from the engine bay? thanks for the replies guys

yup..also good idea to have the block decked and the head resurfaced for a good tight seal.

Yes, they must be honed when replacing rings. No, the head doesn't need to be cut or the block decked....only if it's warped, or you wanna bump compression.

and yes, the block can be honed while in the car, just make sure to do it carefully and clean the block good to get all the flakes out.

cool guys thanks, yeah i am not gonna bother with milling the head or decking the block, right now it seals perfectly. the rings are my only concern ever since a little dyno mishap and since then i've been burning a slight amount of oil and have alittle more positive crankcase pressure than normal. Leakdown test also verified the rings in two cylinders, not that bad but bad enough to annoy me.
