for home audio my pic is anything but bose. The denon reciever are nice but i prefer arcam and rotel besides...he's only looking for advice on bookshelf speakers.
I would look into the B&W 600 series. I used to have the LCR 60 as a center channel and it was an amazing speaker. well worth the money. granted the speakers may be slightly over a few hundred dollars i think in the long run they're worth it. You should be able to get a great set for $400-500 . my thoughts on home speakers is buy the right ones the first time and keep them forever. like my CDM 9's

I agree with this. Vifa speakers are hard to beat. Just make sure you match the replacement driver to the box it's going into. You may have an issue matching the driver exactly to the crossover, but I think anything is better than an old ragged out speaker. Many of the highest of high end speakers use Vifa drivers.

also do home speakers have to be matched to box size like car subs? (cu.ft.)

Some high end drivers are cheap, throw a pair in there and see what happens. Anything beats old blown out speakers anyhow. I've always wondered what would happen if you threw hi end speakers in some old enclosures.
