Help me to find the thread on Sound deadening/Noise reduction
Sometime back there was a thread with details about reducing the interior noise with some sound deadening material( from Home depot...). Can somebody help me to find that thread?? I can't find it after using the different search options.
This is a long post, but it's worth reading if you want to be quiet....
I don't know about the thread, but I am going to be doing this soon and this is what I am going to do, but beware...this will add weight to your car and decrease your HP to weight ratio, and therefore... make you slower.....
You have two choices of the sound deadening material...maybe three...
1) Dynamat from a car audio store... it comes in rolls, it's expensive... about $100 for whole car with floor, doors and maybe even the roof and backseat
2) Generic dynamat, from same stereo store... less expensive, not sure on cost tho
3) Home depot....Roofing tar... less expensive, not sure on exact cost
After applying dynamat to the metal surfaces of your car and before you put the carpet back on... you can also:
a) Goto a domestic car dealership and buy woven fiberglass type material and lay it down over the dynamat
b) Go to Home Depot or a home carpeting store and buy the material used under floor carpeting and lay that on the floor of the vehicle.
Then re-lay you carpet
...for further sound deadening, buy and apply heat resistant dynamat to the underside of your hood.
Pros:
If you do all that I have listed here... your car will sound like a Lexus on the inside....
Cons:
This will add about 40 pounds to your car
PS, this is bitch work and a shop will quickly suck out all the money from your bank account if you don't want to do this yourself. The plus side is you can wire you stereo like a pro while you have no carpet inside your car......
Estimated install time.... 4 hours (if you have never done it b4: 5 hrs and 4 Aspirin)
Good luck and may the force be with you....

I posted one of the threads you are referring to have since removed the "Home Depot", which didn't turn out to work as well as I would've liked. Currently I have removed the stock deadening material (bar tar strips) which collectively weigh ~15-17lbs. and its place have layed Dynamat Xtreme which is a deal lighter than (~5-6lbs. for 16 square feet) the "Original" Dynamat and works better as well.
In response to what X2BOARD posted I'd like to recommend not doing that simply because 40lbs. is quite a bit of weight, if you were to put anything thicker than a piece of paper (or Dynamat) under the carpeting in our cars you'll find you've run into a few fitment issues.

A member on this board (kevbatch) used home carpet padding on his. It costs less than $20 as far as I remember. And he used spray on adhesive to stick everything together. I'd message him for more info. The archive seems to have been erased.
It can add 40+, maybe even 55 lbs to your car depending on material used, the cheeper stuff can weigh more....
I apologize for not pointing out the weight differences, I was just giving options concerning cost, not everyone is willing to shell out crazy money for dynamat....
Big Ed is correct, Exteme Dynamat is thinner and weighs slightly less than Dynamat, but Dynamat is lighter than the cheep stuff, I just figured you'd know you "get what you pay for" approach....
hell, if you have the $$$, I would highly recommend using EXTEREME DYNAMAT, it is thinner, lighter and **
COOL
ALSO has heat protection, so your floor boards will be cooler !!! That is what is in my car....
As far as the carpet padding..... the car padding used in a GM car is some of the best you can get (beleive it or not).... it is not as expensive as other stuff and will not have carpet fitment issues....
X2's stupid tip of the day:
Certain types of heat resistant dynamat can be applied to the underside of your hood !! That's quiet !!!
But don't you like the sound of your engine SCREAMING down a empty road....
