Default Compression Check, turned out...

One of my freinds was very curious about how much compression my R had, So he whipped out the tools and to our suprise all were between 230 and 236. Not bad huh?

And yes the car was warm from driving-

Hey Rob!
Do you burninate any oil?

I had a very good compression test in march, but at the time I did (and still do) burn some oil - especially on the track.

I'm starting to burn way too much oil at the track... and even some now on the highway (like on our 85-90mph+ trip from Chicago to Omaha). Not much around town, odd.

So. If we both have good compression results, but burn oil pretty good, what the heck is going on?

I've never understood this. Can anyone enlighten us?

Valve seals? Piston rings? something else?

Chris - aware that a leakdown would help.

And the back bumper gets black sut but not that much

Great numbers. I hope to get similarly close numbers.

One quart every 500 miles?- I think thats a bit much, and I hope you did not burn that much.

and Each session is a quart used.

Chris and Rob, what oil are you using? Maybe you should try something else. Mobil1 synthetic seem to like to burn.

Yup I do use Mobile 1 5/30, I know its a burn victim but to tell the truth- I'm afraid to switch to anything else

I hear this oil and that oil are good if not better, But the availability of mObIle 1 is easily had and some oils are not and the way I burn/ go thru oil I always need to get more randomly

yeah the type r's are renowned for burning oil.. if i top mine up, it will most definately burn down to approx. mid way on the dip stick. If i dont top it off it doesnt actually burn much more oil off.. when i goto the track i top it up with oil expecting to have to top up by the end of the day... however in not too long itll settle at the midway point again..

lol. And I thought I was bad at 2.5 quarts per oil change

I've been told, but cannot confirm the oil rings, not compression rings are failing. Makes sense why mine also compression checks fine (210+ across all four) but uses lots of oil.

btw-switching from Mobil 1 seemed to decrease my R's affinity for oil consumption a little (not a lot). I now use Valvoline Max Life 5 or 10W-30. I buy it by the 5 quart jug at Wal-Mart for around $9. *MUCH* cheaper than Mobil 1 when you add up the change and the added oil.

I use Schaeffer's 10w30. When I switched from Mobil 1 5w30, it burnt much LESS oil, but appears to be burning much more now, maybe back to the level i was burning with mobil 1.

Chris - who also has good compression numbers. and an oil burning problem

what oil do you guys use? that could be very well the cause of the oil consumption.

Healthy numbers and damn, I thought I burninated a lot of oil. I go through about a quart or two between fresh oil changes, but I seem to burn a hell of a lot more with lots of vTaK! driving, as evidenced by my rear bumper. my compression numbers were very healthy as well so Im guessing(hoping) valve seals. leakdown will tell for sure. Ill be redoing the head over the winter anyway so hopefully that will take care of it.

I use Mobil 1 Delvac oil, and I burn I do burn oil too.
What would be a better oil?

My R was burning oil when I got it, with 235 #'s, and 30K miles. My numbers are the same now at 40K. I'll be doing a leakdown in a week or so, and should know more.

I changed to Castrol Syntec 5W30, and oil consumption has slowed, but not stopped. I am still going through at least 1-1.5 qts per change. I drive in VTEC quite a bit. I expect to burn much more once I get on the track. I have very little soot on the bumper, just a few dots here and there. I see no black or blue smoke. I burn very little or no oil when I'm not revving hard.

Your oil comsumption problems are directly related to RPMs. If you're bagging on it, it will burn oil, and that is because the R/S ratio is such that the rings can't seal properly at high rpms because the bores are fubared. The rod is pushing the piston into the side of the bore with alot more force at high rpms, and the rings are wearing, and also fluttering because of a tapered and out of round cylinder bore.

"If you're bagging on it"

I drive like I stole it everyday, I always in the upper rpm even if I'm not going fast

Rob, how did you do your compression test? Did you crank it 5 times for each cylinder or did you you just keep cranking until the needle on the compression tester stopped going up?

I just did a compression test and when cranking it up 5 times, my numbers were
#1Cylinder - 210
#2Cylinder - 210
#3Cylinder - 210
#4Cylinder - 225

When I cranked it 10 times, my numbers were
#1Cylinder - 240
#2Cylinder - 240
#3Cylinder - 240
#4Cylinder - 245

I use Mobil1 and burn a quart every 3K miles but I have no noticeable black stains on my bumper. I've switched to AMSOIL to see if I can curb the oil burning.
