I have a 96 Accord LX & over the weekend I hit 50,000mi.
I know i need to give it a tune up but what sould i do?
spugs, wires, oil change, air filter. WHAT ELSE ????

 

tranny oil, and radiator fluid wouldn't hurt

 

fresh brake fluid (every 2 years)

 

the valves are mechanical i think, anyone know when to adjust them?

 

Here's everything I'd do...

Oil & filter, air filter, fuel filter, PCV valve, plugs & wires (NGK!), cap & rotor, valve lash, check ignition timing and adjust if necessary, if it's an auto -FLUSH- the tranny fluid (don't just drain and refill) and use Honda ATF (and if it's manual, drain and refill... Honda MTF is good stuff), flush power steering fluid with Honda P.S. fluid, flush brake fluid, flush coolant, check CV boots for tears, check balljoints and tierod ends for excessive play and/or broken boots, check all accessory drive belts for cracks and wear, and of course make sure the brakes are still good and meaty.

 

Pick up a Haynes manual for your car (from Autozone, or other stores). This will tell you how to repair or fix anything on the car, plus will tell you what the maintenance schedule is. Or read your owner's manual.

I assume your cabin filter (air conditioning filter) is due to be replaced, definately flush and fill your radiator if you haven't done so already, and change your brake fluid.

I've never been in your generation of Accord, much less looked for the cabin filter, but in my '99 Accord you have to remove the glove box and possibly the front right dash, disconnect the airbag, and wiggle the filter through some metal bars that are in that area. It's a real pain and I don't recommend doing it every 30,000 miles (as recommended in the owner's manual), though 50,000 is enough mileage to get it done. The filter itself is cheap from Autozone, etc.

 

I don't think Accords had cabin filter until 6th gen.

Do you know the service history? What service was done at 30K?

If the big 30K service was skipped, I would do this:

LOF
Air Filter (there is not a cabin filter)
Drain and fill radiator (1 gallon of Type II Honda antrifreeze, $11)
Drain and fill transmission (approximately 2.7 qts., use Honda fluid $12)
Replace the spark plugs (NGK NGK NGK)
Flush the brake fluid
Inspect the brakes/rotate the tires
Adjust valves (if the valves are not noisey, you can skip it if you like)
Clean the throttle plates if your gas pedal 'sticks'.

Do not replace the PCV valve or the spark plug wires. They seldom have a problem at 50K and both are covered under factory warranty for 150K miles.

You should replace the timing belt at 90K miles but it does not hurt to check it.

 

my wife only drives to work & thats only 3 miles from home, the rest of them are from trips to E-TOWN, NJ. car doesnt get beat.

 

I assume you take it out on the interstate so it gets some longer driving every once in awhile?
