no, the gears in the y1 are pretty long. Overall shorty than an LS, but longer than the j1/s1.

My SiR Y1 runs about 5000-rpm at 80-mph.

Pretty short gears, imo.

I believe it goes a lil somethign like this from shortest to longest... S1, J1, Y1. I had a S1 in my old crx and man that was a badass trans as long as you never had to go on the highway. Light to light and at the strip that thing ripped. Now in my hatch I have a J1 and the final drive is still way to short IMO. 4000rpm @ 70mph sux, especially since I moved to Florida and the speed limit is 70!!! Its still a good trans, however I'm looking into a ls final drive for my frequent excursions on I-95.

Yup, S1 is a great trans. J1/S1 have the same ratios though. They're pretty much the same transmission. Just so you know, you want an LS fifth gear, NOT the final drive. The final drive would screw up your nice gearing. Check out this post that my brother made about the swap:

Bah, I'm an idiot; wrong link!!! HERE: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=555929

i think the overall consensus is that the ys1 is the ideal tranny. not too long not too short. and it has better options IMO. u can add many different kinds of LSD's and gearsets. Rebuildable with easier to get parts also which is a major .

the gsr ys1 is the ideal tranny because it is THE shortest cable b series tranny and the parts. It all depends what you want. You like long gears, get an LS (usdm a1/s1/ys1). You want short gearing, get the gsr ys1 or jdm s1/j1. The y1 is kinda in the middle, but more toward the long side, since it has the 4.26 (or whatever) FD like an LS.

remember there are 2 S1 trannies. The us spec S1 out of the inttegra is long as ****, the JDM S1 out of the xsi is very short. s1 and j1 really short, y1 and ys1 about the same. You need the newer clutch disk for the ys1 since it is 92-93 tranny. They say the ys1 is built stronger like the new hydro trannies.

thats what I remember from my y1. There is still some misinformation in this thread. Maybe this will help.

Remember that there is a jdm s1 (short) and a usdm s1 from the rs/gs/ls (long).
Also, there are 2 ys1's, one from the jdm xsi/rsi/usdm gsr and the other is in 92-93 integra ls/rs/gs.

I personally have a y1 (w/lsd) in my civic and a ys1 (long) in my stock 93 integra ls-s.

I feel that the y1 is superior to the j1/s1. They all have close gear ratios, except that the y1 first gear starts out slightly "taller", due to the final drive.
I can honestly say that first gear in the j1/si trannies is just worthless. Its so damn low its rediculous. I used to start out in 2nd gear most of the time daily driving.
With a y1 you get the same close ratio shifting, but it just starts higher.
Im currently running a y1 1-4th gears with an LS 5th, in an LS casing.

Possibly, but you have to love the S1/J1's gearing at the track. My B16 is basically stock and can use all the gearing help it can get. Still, you're right; first gear is pretty much useless on these transmissions. Ah well, they're fun.
