car just shuts off..why

my boy's car sometimes just shuts off and when it happens he told that there is a funny smell (maybe gas).. what should i tell him.. he just an oil change 2 weeks ago

Could be the main relay, it give the fuel pump the juice to run.

does it start up right after it dies or does it have trouble starting back up? and does it do this at idle, while driving?

Also check the ignition switch, mine went bad and it caused the car to shut off randomly, and sometimes just not start at all.
