best d series to turbo in an ef?
i was wondering what is the best d series motor/tranny set up to turbo in an ef
i understand that the d16y7 and y8 are much harder to wire then the d16z6
also i read that in the sohc the vtec motors are best to turbo over the non vtec motors.
i also read that the si/ex tranny is best because it has shorter gears so it accelerates faster.
im looking to turbo a d series vtec motor in a crx. so any help would be greatly apreciated!
TIA

first...best is relative...
i thought that with turbo, longer gearing was better so as to spool the turbo. thats why an ls engine/tranny was ideal for turbo. when i had a crx, i was looking into the d16z6 with greddy turbo kit.

I don't think the longer gears are said to be better to spool the turbo. I think people say, it lets you stay in boost longer, cause you have to re-build boost when you go manifodl vaccuum, i.e. shift.
The way to approach that dilema is to analyze your powerband, and where you fall into rpm, when you shift, whatever... that's another thread unto itself.
vtec motor/non vtec motor. I like the idea with FI of the air intake being able to breathe more, at high rpms.... so, vtec is advantageous. But not in that I would take a d16-vtec over a b18-non-vtec, vtec isn't the "killer app(lication) that ppl make it out to be...
Are you doing this in an EF or in a CRX?
the d16y8 with matched tranny 98+ is probably your best option, I BELIEVE the 98+ they switched from aluminum shifter forks to steel ones, which is nice, also the Y8 is the best flowing d-series intake manifold.
wiring the z6 and y8 is the same. The can use the same engine harness interchangabley, and can both be run off of OBD1 succesfully, you need an OBD1 P28 ecu, incidentlly.
si/ex tranny. canada it's the si, US it's the ex, the US SI tranny is not d-series compatible. do some more research on this one, I saw the thread recently where people said go with a close ratio tranny, but I've heard dissent in the past. I dunno, the issue is still on the table.

i am talking the 92-95 si/ex tranny wich is the same exact thing. the si hatchback has the d16z6 same as the ex version
when i say ef i mean crx. crx is a version of the ef civic correct? either way weather its the civic or the crx i dont think it would make a difference in the swap.
are u sure that the y8 wiring is the same as the z6?
