Default typeS head on Si motor... need 6th gear?

this question is from my homeboy at work. he owns a 2003 Si and wants to get a typeS head/pistons put into it. he was wondering would he need to also swap in the tranny from the S? does he need that 6th gear or is he fine with 5? TIA

From what I have read the 2 trannies have the same final drive, and there is no connection between the head and the tranny, so my answer is no, unless he just wants to shift more..

At 4.764, the final drive of the EP3 transmission is actually shorter than the RSX-S which has a final drive of 4.388. I don't know how much this will affect the acceleration of a K20A3 with a A2 head.

I say use the Si tranny for a while. See how it works out. There doesn't seem to be much hands on experience with this yet.

This might be pointless depending on your friend's situation, but I've heard it's cheaper to just buy the whole engine and 6spd tranny than just the head, because people will pay pretty good money for the stock Si motor...

I'm sure if you swap head and ecu, then shifting at 7900 rpms will keep you in Vtec more then the SI's ecu redlining you at 6800. Not so much the gearing.

the EP 5 speed is the best tranny for an all motor setup, just add LSD.

Hype S 6 speed is just an unusable overdrive.............

Yeah maybe for the 'big block', but for the 2.0L, that's not true. A guy on clubrsx (screenname jdkindle) ran 13.8's in the 1/4 with his type s. He was doing something to his tranny so he ended up putting an ep3 tranny in to be able to drive the car. He ran it in the 1/4 and couldn't run lower than ~14.5's. 70mph in second gear and 105 in third. Doesn't seem very all motor oriented to me.

What's so unusable about it?

Lap times, not quarter mile times, will show the "true" difference between the trannys.

All that I'm stating is that the 6spd's gear spacing is not as "ideal" @ higher speeds as is the EP tranny, yes it may be "faster" in a Fast and Furious type of 1/4 mile way, but if you do a few laps at CMS or VIR or Glen or etc....you'll see that the EP gearing is best.

for boost, the EP tranny and Hype-S FD is the ticket...

not to be a Richard, but trust me.

Quaife = $810.00

Spoon six speed including Torsen axle = $1200

the above IS something to consider though......

saving $$ always good

Yeah 1/4 times so are so Fast and Furious, please forgive me for ever bringing them up

If the longer gears are better, then why do people in the type R forums who road race go nuts over the JDM or ATS FD? I know it's not the same tranny, but if you look at the mph you get in each gear in the type r tranny compared to a Hondata type s, they are very close.

And aren't you running a K24 w/type s head?

FD and gear ratios are two totally different things...

Yes, I know that.

Have you personally tried the type s tranny on the road course?

Does anyone have a link, or can post up the gear ratios of the EP and RSXs trannies?
