Default 88-91 Civic Transmission Differences

Searched, but nothing on splines......

I just got an 89 STD for free, but the motor is junk.

I was gonna get a D16A6 from http://www.nippon-motors.com cause their the only place I know that sells OBD0 engines. But I'll need a transmission as-well.

They list the 88-91 transmission from 20 or 21 splines. Can someone please tell me the difference.

1.5 to 1.6? 4spd to 5spd? ......?

Thanks.

Thanks guys.

Are they still interchangable on any D series? 88 engine/tranny have to stay together....89-00 can swap around? I guess what I'm wondering is, why the difference/what's the difference?

You wouldn't happen to know any other online site that sells D16A6 motors/swaps?

They are all interchangable but if you use the 88 trans you have to use an 88 clutch and flywheel as well but it will still bolt right up to any of them. Not sure why or the reasoning behind the difference?? Maybe because it was the first year for a different tranny? But there isnt a difference in performance wise.

As for another online site well you can check the classifieds here or ebay or local junkyards? Theres others also if anything just do a search on google.com and see what comes up.

You learn something new everyday. Thank you Vinceg99, 88CiViC_DX, & elmalouno.

I never real did anything to my CRX so I don't have the 4th gen knowledge. I'm stuck with all this 5th gen knowledge, but still wanting to learn.

Thanks again guys. This piece of knowledge probably saved me a huge headache and a lot of money.

don't forget that if you get a 5-speed Si transmission you will also need Si Axles and Si knuckle/hub assemblies 'cause the Std/DX axles won't fit into the Si tranny, and the Si axles won't fit into DX/Std hub assemblies.

Will the D16Y7 axles work?

Or do I have to get 88-91 SI axles and hubs no matter what?

Well what you could do is get the STD. axles cause the inboard on the tranny is the same. So you can use the Si tranny with the STD. axles and it will work.

I know that with CRX's atleast that the DX's no matter manual or automatic are the same as Si's in fact I am running automatic DX axles on my Si tranny right now since they are the ones I bought and have a lifetime warranty on them.

*EDIT* But yeah with the exception of the STD. hatch and the HF CRX all the axles would be the same.
