Default whats better longer 5th or different final drive - are they compatible(cable & hydro)?

i have a JDM SIR-G hydro tranny w/LSD. i love the super tight gears but not on the freeway. the car is built for auto-x and daily driven. What would be better for my uses, an LS 5th and keep Final drive the same or keep the gears the same and use an LS FD?I have an LS cable tranny - are the two types interchangeable?
anyone with experience?

I'm pretty sure that the final drive on a cable tranny wouldn't work in a hydro. If you used the Final drive out of an LS you would lengthen ALL the gears not just the 5th gear. If it bothers you that much I would suggest getting a GSR 5th gear as it's tollerable on the highway. An LS 5th gear you would drop out of your powerband too easily.

Keep the stock gears and buy a different FD. Something in the 4.7 and up range.

how easy would it be to change out a b16 5th gear for a LS or GS-R 5th?? Are the **** forks or shafts interchangeable? I'm trying to rebuild my 99 Si's tranny, need a new fifth gear, 5th gear shift fork, and the shaft the 5th gear is on. Its so hard to find a b16 tranny and they are so expensive I was thinking maybe i could swap out the parts from a less expensive GS-R tranny.

How many times do you actually use 5th when racing? Unless you are putting down some serious power, or are racing some high speed tracks, never.

Why lengthen all of your geras with a tall final drive, when you can throw in an LS 5th, and still have the tight gears down low for when you want to rip?

An LS 5th is a fairly easy mod, as far as tranny mods go (or so I hear). My friend did it in his y1, and it is very nice on the highway.

Is there a difference between a final drive and a 5th gear? thats a newb question. Also, how does a final drive change the rest of the gears to be longer? I have a B16 tranny and ALL I WANT is a new 5th gear to cruise on a highway at low RPMs. What is the gearing like on a GSR tranny and Type r? Speeds for each gear?

yes, what you want is a LS 5th, not a LS FD, because the former will only affect 5th gear, whereas the FD will make all your gears slow.

I want a 6-speed
