Because the sale was low.... When I got mine back in March 98, there were 4 sitting in the lot and after I got mine, the other 3 still sat there for a long time.
At that time I remember I hardly saw any modified cars around. There's no "scene" like we have now.

Emission problems.
When I had my first R in 97 #315. The Rs already arrived in CA port since March but I didn't get delivered to my dealer till July.
Then in 98, EPA found out the American Honda faked some emission no. for US standard so they have to stop selling and took one yr to revised the R to legally pass US emission standard. That is why 00-01 R have different cams to make up the lost pwr dude to higher emission standard.

The reason I believe they didn't sell in N. America for '99 is because Honda released the Civic Si coupe that year. Honda is smart about not killing their sales by making a new vehicle compete with another in either line.

I've heard about the emission problem for the 97's. The dealer said that the cars were sitting in the ship and couldn't land. But I've never heard about "faking the numbers" for the 98 tho.
I heard all the same things, only never put together. I waited for my 97, which was apparently waiting at the port. Keep in mind I'm in Canada though, so it might have been a different port and it might have been for a different reason. I also heard about the problem Honda had with the EPA, but when I heard it they never specifically stated which model(s) they were referring to. And everyone has heard the cam thing (even though some of us are still doubtful about that... hehe). Hearing it all together all makes sense.
edit: I dunno if the EPA problems I remembered hearing had to do with the Type R. Here's a link to what I remember: http://www.expressindia.com/fe....html

Agreed! And I wrote it
No, seriously though- I never said the Si was competition for the R on the track- but the same demographic buys R's as Si's for the most part- I know alot of guys who would spank my car in their $18k Si with $4k Turbo- Sorry lets not go there!
