Do you primarily have the vents set to recirculate the air?
This will often cause a musty smell. It is recommended to use outside air every so often, especially when the car is going to be parked for a while. The vents allow air to flow through them even when the car is turned off when they're set to outside air.

most likely driving without shoes and smearing nasty toes into the carpet. Then the germs get transferred into the air ducts, and now you have funky air coming out of your vents.
This just happened to my 2-month-old BMW, and the dealer just sprayed some "Air Conditioner Treatment" into the ventilation intake under the hood and ran the heater and A/C on high to the floor vents for a while. The funky smell totally disappeared. I think they sell the stuff at Murray's; it is called Ozium or something.

i like to turn the AC off before i turn the car off so condensation does not build up in the vents and promote mold growth. there was a post about this a month or so ago. try to search and see what comes up.
Oh, cool.
They sell Ozium at Albertson's.
It's just a kickass air freshener spray, although you do usually find it with the automotive parts. Actually, I use that stuff for my ducts. Works great for getting the smell of cigarettes out of there.

If your a/c system was ever exposed to the atmosphere the drier is probably ruined and will make the unpleasant smell you describe. it's a ~30-40$ piece.
Before buying anything try this first. All A/C's will smell unless you blow normal air after you have used the A/C. So the next time you use it, when you turn off the A/C let the normal fans blow for a little while to get all of the freon cleared out. The problem lies when you just shut off the A/C and let the gases chill inside the vents.
So next time just blast your normal vents afterwards and it should work. 1 to 2 minutes should do.

Here is a rather good article on why a/c stinks:
http://www.imcool.com/articles...s.htm
Condensation forms on cool evaporator fins and tubes and collects in the pan. Inlet air brings along contaminants like dirt, pollen and plant and animal debris, some of which is deposited on the wet fins and in the pan. Additionally, if a system spends much time in re-circ mode, it also gathers matter like pet hair and nicotine and tars from cigarette smoke. Another cause could be leaking evaporators allowing oil to coat the fins. Certain evaporators, housings and pans are more prone to accumulating these contaminants than others.
Armed with the nourishment (contaminants) listed above, the warm, moist, dark, environs of the housing encourage beasties (microorganisms, mold, mildew, fungi, bacteria, etc.) to form and multiply. Being alive and growing means they produce gas. This gas, a volatile organic compound, IS the problem: its moldy odor stinks.
AirSept believes that “limited under hood space in downsized vehicles, along with increased need for air cooling in vehicles with higher glass content, led vehicle manufacturers to reduce the size of a/c evaporators while simultaneously increasing the fin count. These more densely packed evaporators trap and hold more moisture.”
YOu are not getting rid of the problem by using OZIUM spray - it's just a temporary patch - you MUST get the a/c system cleaned out
Smaller cars like Hondas/Acuras have smaller evaporators and thus are prone to this problem

bird.... my dad bought a used car and pulled the air vent intake filter, found a birds nest made out of cigarette butts and other ****. just another reason why birds make such good pellet gun targets
For best effect, do not spray Ozium directly into the vents.
Instead, turn the fan to recirculation, setting 3 or 4, and spray the Ozium in the general area of the passenger side footwell. The intake is behind the centre console and it will suck the stuff up and force it through the entire system.

I usually put it on fresh when I'm about a few miles out from where I'm going. I've never smelled a thing from the AC system.

It's a product by "MOC" and I got it from the acura dealer. Not available to my knowledge at places like Pep Boys.

The location of the vents are here:
Turn the a/c on full blast with no recirculation. Then spray the stuff into the vent intake generously (as told by the Master Honda technician (not me
)
). Then after a while, change the temp to full heat with A/C still and spray generously again into the vent intakes. and let the system run for 5 more min. then cycle the A/C as mentioned in this post. THe smell should go away and kill whatever is growing in there. Remember to close the windows when doing this and do not inhale the substatnces initially until the process is complete. Instructions are explained on the can and if need be, I'll take a pic of the instructions as well
The mildew/mold smell is not good for your health i heard
