oem style sony deck a good buy?
hi i'm lookin into getting this for my eg hatch
what do you think? I can get a used one for 65shipped right now,
looks pretty good but i'm not sure.
I do want something lowkey.. like i'm not into those superflashy style decks nowadays. A nakamichi deck would be great.. but uhh.. 300bux is a bit much 4 me.
ALSO, does anyone know what car this is from??? or is it just designed to LOOK oem by sony?
good sound quality??
thanks alot

I actually have had 5 Sony headunits from that era (same style faceplate, some earlier and some later). One was a tape deck, the other 4 were various CD players. Here's the history:
1. CD Player purchased in 1994 for $300 - I still have it in my '55 chevy, and it still runs as the day it was new, although half of the display is now dim. Past that, it operates flawlessly. Not bad for a 9 year old unit.
2. CD Player purchased in 1995 - was stolen, but worked perfectly until that point.
3. CD Player purchased in 1996 - to replace #2 - sold it with an old Honda. The unit worked flawlessly until the day it was sold in 2000. No clue what happened past that. this unit actually survived a car wreck that totaled a '85 Prelude
4. ES CD Player purchased in 199? - Had it in my mother's Explorer until 2 months ago when it was replaced with an Alpine. It needed a laser alignment, and one channel seemed to go out intermittently. We decided ti was time for a new unit. I gave the head to a buddy, he's using it as a tuner with no issues as we speak. Turns out the intermittent prob was a wiring issue...go figure.
5. Tape Deck - given to me in 1998 - I had a CD player stolen out of my other truck in college. A friend gave me the tape deck for some interim tunes. Worked fine, but the display had gone out mysteriously. I gave it back in 2000.
So, in summary, out of 5 units I had, the buttons worked on every single one of them, and some still do to this day. My biggest gripe was with the displays. So long as the display and of course the buttons work, I don't think it will be that big of a deal. But, just keep in mind it's a 6-8 year old piece of electronics....
That unit is not OEM, it's an aftermarket piece. That's what aftermarket units looked like around 6-10 years ago...they were very simple looking. Hard to imagine with the flashy garbage on the market today.
If it was me, I'd save my money and go buy the cheapest pioneer or alpine that they make. I can understand the flashy thing, but having a new piece with a warranty is better then taking a $65 gamble on that Sony. Maybe you can find a Nak 35z used on the bay for cheap....just a thought

my brother and his friend both had sony decks back then. i think it still might be in the garage right now. maybe they abused them to the point where they broke, but my brother and his friend both said that they suck because the buttons broke just a lil past a year. when they took it back to where they bought it from, the people who worked there said that a lot of them come back for broken buttons. who knows.

and yeah, I did some research(saw another online that stated the model #)
its from like 96.. screw that,
reliability aside.. a 7 year old deck is going to be on its deathbed
