Rust spots?
Hey everyone. I bought my CRX about 2 months ago now...and I am very happy with it. So far, not many small complaints at all! I was outside cleaning my interior with some Simple Green (awesome stuff..), and cleaning my windows off and the works, and I noticed 2 small developing rust spots. They are located at the spot where you open the hatch, and the curve meets the hatch. I don't know how else to describe it, to be honest- sorry. Anyways, the first spot, is maybe 1 cm (or smaller) wide..and you can see some metalish color, and it has a little rust "ring" around it, it looks like..just developing. Then there is another spot on the opposite side of the body, same location..which is just a small spot where the paint is no longer there, and you can see bare metal..but no rust- yet. Would anyone be so kind as to point me in the right direction on fixing my problem before it multiplies! I have gotten a lot of "don't worry about it.."s from people, but I am very picky about small details. NO RUST on my car.
I have been told to sand the area down to the bare metal, and use spray primer. I am getting a paintjob in about 6 months or so (it'll be cold winter..and wet)...so would just the primer be OK? Thanks..

Well from how your explaing it it seems to me where the rust is is where the to rubber stoppers for the hatch rest. Is that right?? As for fixing it yeah your best bet is to sand it down prime it then PAINT it NEVER leave a spot with just primer on it primer actually absorbs moisture so you will want to get paint on it or use a sealer primer then you wont have the problem with it absorbing it. Also if you are going to do this yourself I would suggest once you do it to leave your hatch open for atleast a day or so so the primer/paint can cure otherwise you will close it the stoppers will rub the fresh paint right off or it will stick to it and just pull it all off.
Well..I got out there and got down to business. I probably explained it poorly..it's not near the rubber stoppers. At the very back, where the curve goes from the hatch, to the taillights, that is sort of where it is. It's hard to explain. Anyways, I primered it...THEN read this...and I have not painted it yet. I did probably 5 or 6 other rusted spots that I found while doing this. I found one spot that was VERY bad (about 1" x 1") above the driver side rear tire (fender). The rust looks like it has eaten into the metal already. The passenger side had the exact same problem, same spot. Then, above the driver side door, had a tiny spot...both driver and passenger sides. I primered the trouble spots. I figure "hey, my car looks like crap for a little while..but at least it's for the better", but I had not thought about the PAINT problem, to be honest. I'm actually leaving now to get some paint. Matching my color will be a pain in the azz..but at this point I will settle for any color!!! Thanks for the help..
Edit: Went to the store, got some color that is (Somewhat) close to my original color, prepped the surface, and painted. Looks fairly good, I suppose...except the 1" x 1" rust spot I primered looks absolutely horrible. The white shows through fairly easy...I need to put on another coat or two of paint..but besides that, all is well.
