I got the same junk from Home Depot for three or four bucks total.
Ooohhh but, it wasn't JDM though so I'm sure it wasn't quite the same quality.

I guess the wire is there to keep out larger bugs and stuff from getting to the filter and clogging it up faster then just dust.

Actually, to me it appears that this setup is intended to bypass the filter altogether (hence the screen) - basically a "race" setup. Where's yoshi with a translation?
