Default b18c5 -> cooling problems?

Anyone have a typer engine in thier CRX? I've got one and I've been having strange cooling problems ever since. I have the 97 Helms Suppliment and used that to route my coolant lines. At this point I'm almost considering that there may be an error in that book. Does anyone have a 98+ helms to compare, or a shot of how they have their coolant lines run (thermostat housing especially). Basically, I get heat out of my vents untill the thermostat opens. Once the coolant starts flowing(somehow)..I gradually start losing heat, espeically if I let the car idle or turn off the heat. The engine temp will be perfectly warmed up...and It'll be blowing cool. If I let the heat sit off for a few then turn it out...it's hot again..but not for long. It sounds like a bad heater core, but when the engine was out i sprayed into the top line, and the bottom line sprayed out coolant with ease. How do you typer guys have your stuff hooked up, and do you have constant heat under all conditions (once the engine is warmed). Thanks.

Sounds like air in the system. How well did you bleed the coolant?

I've bled it really well. I have a dual pass customer radiator and I'm considering it may be just extremely difficult to bleed the thing, but I'm confident all the air is out.....is there any tools to extract the bubbles other then letting them come out the cap?? (typer upper hose outlet doesnt have bleeder..). No doubt I've spent close to 2 hours burping bubbles out...Maybe I'll give it a shot again see if I can get any more out....but I'm pretty convinced it's not air. I've had this problem through a few rebuilds..and it's never generated heat reliably. About the only thing I haven't done is replace the heatercore...eventhough It seems to be fine. Hot going in, very warm coming out..that's about right for the heater hoses true?

Also a thread that shows what other things I've done.. (brand new heater valve, all new hoses, thermostate etc..)

By the way Jared...nice Sig, For the past couple of years, I've used. 'Jack of all trades, Master of some.

the way my b series heater hoses were hooked up was, that heater inlet with that little box that lets coolant in was hooked up to the block from behind the upper radiator hose, and the heater out hooked to a place behind and to the right of the thermostat

oh and u said "I gradually start losing heat, espeically if I let the car idle or turn off the heat" well u will lose heat if u turn off the heat

Civic, I meant to say I turn the fan off. I leave the selector on heat..so there still should be engine temp coolant running through..and heat at any time I turn the fan on right?

Also, is your B series a typer? The GSR, B16A thermostat housing are NOT the same as the others..... I know that one of the GSR outlets end up going to the water pipe on the back of the block...typer does not. Thanks.

yeah if u leave it on hot coolant should be runnin through the heater so if u turn the fan on, u should get hot air within a few moments

my b series is a ls

Yeah..so when I turn it on, I usually get heat for a bit..then it will run cold even if I leave the fan on for 30 minutes. If I turn the fan off, and let it sit for 10 minutes, I'll get another blast of heat when I turn it out till it runs cold. It's pretty obvious the coolant isnt flowing.......the heater core gets hot..and then I extract all the heat....I'm almost gonna try flipping the coolant lines on the thermostat housing.....really annoying.

Do you let it bleed with the car running until the thermostat opens AND you have good heat?
