is it illegal to insure a car to a state you dont live in?

these guys i know, say they can insure my car in north carolina for $112.00 a month for a 03' s2000...they said ill get NC plates and registration too

but we live in new york city and here they quoted me for $6,000.00 a year!

i kow about 6-7 people who have NC plates that live here by me.

is this common to do and is it illegal???

I believe you either have to own property or claim residency in the state to claim insurance, but state law probably varies, so NY may be different than NC. Check with a lawyer before writing any checks.

 

Methinks it would be bad if you have a claim. I wouldnt risk it.

 

in NYC.. yes, this is a very common ins. scam. Not sure on how legal or illegal it is though. I have friends w/ VT, PA, NJ, etc... and they all live in NYC.

 

its defrauding an insurance company. you tell me if fraud is legal

 

The insurance company will base your policy on the address that the car is stored at most of the time. so... sounds like a scam that could get you in big trouble!
