Default insurance illegal??

is it illegal to insure a car to a state you dont live in?
these guys i know, say they can insure my car in north carolina for $112.00 a month for a 03' s2000...they said ill get NC plates and registration too

but we live in new york city and here they quoted me for $6,000.00 a year!

i kow about 6-7 people who have NC plates that live here by me.

is this common to do and is it illegal???

thanks
B

yes its illegal...i'm actually not sure how you can get around it...if you dont have a NC residence how the hell are they gonna prove you live in NC?

u go get a box at like mailbox's etc.......have a bill sent there and then have mailbox's etc. forward it to your real address, then use that bill to prove you live in Cali. I think that is what most people do as far as I know. My parents own land in a county that doesn't need emis. so I just registered my car under that address.

well heres the thing... i know the guy who owns this ins co. so if i have to put a claim in, i wont be asked any questions.

and the guys i know who have the NC plates have P.O. boxes in NC and have the mail forwarded here to nyc.

im still going to look into it more though. i guess theres a loophole for everything.
