Default Timing Belt Change

I did a search but couldnt find a good solid answer to this question. I have 63k on my 5th Gen and am starting to think its getting close to time to think about doing the timing belt. I have heard stories of them snapping as early as 60k which seems insane to me.

I was planning on waiting till 70k or 75k to do it, do any of you think this is too long? Should I just bite the bullet and do it now or will it be safe to wait a few months?

Thanks for the help.

-Jeff

I do mine every 60k. Don't mess with the timing belt, its as important as putting oil in the engine.

some belts last longer than other. i got 110k on my civic with the original belt. lucky me. gonna change it soon. but yeah, if its on your mind this much then change it. dont forget water pump, tensioner, and seals. might as well. preludes are a bitch (space is tight). its cheaper to replace a timing belt then a valve or piston.

probaly should change it to be on the safe side, it's better then ending up with bigger (motor) problems.

i'd recommend you change it. it's pretty much impossible to gauge the life left in a timing belt, and the longer you wait, the more risk you are taking.

the change intervals for timing belts vary, but assuming 60k miles is the recommended interval, it's very possible for a belt to last twice, even triple that - however, if it doesnt, you will most likely be doing some significant engine work.

According to my dealer-the interval can be 90k for a 5th gen. Earlier generations are ~60k. If you are not the original owner and the car is more than 5 years old it is also recommended that you do it now, regardless of the mileage. When something is unknown because you do not have the service records-it is prudent to do the maintenance earlier rather than later. I agree tht you should replace all of the belts, water pump and anything else that is recommended since the covers are off anyway.
Keep in mind that all of this is based on the car being a "daily driver" with minimal "spirited driving." The harder you are on it-the sooner you should do the work.

Take a look at the belt and see what kind of shape its in. Then determine whether you should change or not. Or just change so you can stop worrying about it.
