Is it safe to redline?
I have a stock DX and I just put in an EX cluster with the tach. Before I shifted way conservatively. Like at 2000 RPMS. Now that I know whats going on with the engine, I like taking it higher.
My question is that is it safe to take it to redline? I mean I know that it's built to go there right? But the car screams at 4000 and i'm kinda scared taking it past that.
Also when I shut the car down it makes a pinging noise. I forgot what the proper term is, but how can I minimize it? Does that mean I'm too hard on the engine?

i have 159,000 miles and I hit redline at least 5 times a day...if not more. Just keep your oil changed...you'll be fine...your honda engine is designed to operate anywhere outside of the redzone...

whoever told you that is an idiot. Pinging is when two flame fronts crash against each other. Its a uncontrolled ignition of the gases in the combustion chamber.

lol..agreed.

I have a DX and was wondering approximately what the redline is in terms of mph. I know that it will vary depending on the road, but what is the mph at redline on flat roads in 2nd gear?
I have always been curious and am too cheap to get a tach.

Dude chill out, and read a little slower. He said "Also when I shut the car down it makes a pinging noise. I forgot what the proper term is, but how can I minimize it? Does that mean I'm too hard on the engine?
To answer the question, It doesnt mean its hard on the engine. Its the normal sound of the aluminum and other metals cooling down as the one dude said. One reason it could be louder is because running an engine harder produces more heat.

I wouldn't "shoot" for redline in first gear becuase it comes so fast. Try and shift about a thousand rpm sooner in first, once you react to it your just about there anyways.
Please remember that if you take your car to high speeds make sure your tires can handle it...

My opinion, is that often times honda designs its heads well enough that its safe even a bit past redline (till fuel cutoff), Its not going to hurt it terrible, but I always try to not to mash the throttle, or keep at high rev's unless I need to.
Be conservative with your rev's, and I'm sure that it will increase the life of the engine, even if the engine will last for a long time ******* it.
That's unless you have a swap in mind, I know some freinds who were trying to kill their cx motors so they could put in swaps, but that motor just wouldn't go!
