Default Can't tell if Vtec is working

hey all i have a 91 civic si w/ a d16z6 head swap done to it. i'm running a fields Boxer series 2 vtec controller and everything else needed for the swap. well i can't really tell if my vtec is working. it seems like it does but it's not all that loud or noticeable. also you'd think i'd hear it in the exhaust because here's what i got: Weapon R intake, DC Sports Ceramic Coated header, focuz stainless cat, act clutch (no sound change) and a thermal Catback exhaust. i normally have the fields unit kick vtec in around 4000-4800rpms. is there any way i can test the solenoid??

Disconnect it and go drive. Also, you can hook up power to it and see if it "clicks"...if it does then ita be okay
