Valve Adjustment HELP!!!! PLEASE@!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi everyone.. i'm doing my first valve adjustment.. got a problem though.. when I was done with it I found out I was using the .015 mm-.021mm instead of the .15-.21mm feeler guages??? so now the engine sounds loud as heck... turned it off...
Does anyone know it's a misprint in the helm manual??? it it really the .15-.21mm???
one more thing.. for each bolt... say on first cylinder.. there are like 4 nuts you can adjust.. 2 on intake and 2 on exhaust... so i'm suppose to insert the feeler guage right on top of the bolt right...????..... not sure how to explain.. ok,. I see the cam... there are like 3 sections...right on top of each nut is a section of the cam... and then there is the middle section where there isn't a nut..??? I'm suppose to adjust the 2 sides of the cam right?? not the middle???? yes it's my frist time... hope someone can help me.. I gotta finish this quick...!!!!
and is it ok that I stick in the feeler guage on the side where the nut is or behind it..what I did was adjust the nut.. stick the guage in from the nut side...if it was too loose then I readjust and stick in the guage again...??? Thanks all!!!

Make sure the engine is under 100deg before starting to do a valve adjustment..
intake - .006-.007
exhaust - .007-.008
Yeah you dont put the gauge inbetween the VTEC lobe and the rocker arm (middle lobe). You do the outer two lobes...you stick it between the cam and the rocker arm.
What i suggest you do is stick the smaller gauge in, and if it fits, good, then stick the larger one, if the larger one goes in, then you can make it a little more snug, so only the smaller gauge fits. For instance, when i did it for the exhaust sides. I stuck the .007 in, and made sure it fit, then try the .008, if it went it, i adjusted them so the .008 cant go in, and the .007 can go in with drag. Dont loosen the lock nut all the way so you have some resistance on the adjustment screw, thats somthing i found helpful. After you tighten it, check it again using the gauges, cause chances are if it's your first time, your gonna move the screw when your locking the nut
.
I did the conversions, and the smallest gauge your gonna use is the
.15mm or .006 inches.
So you were using the wrong gauge.
But i have a feeling your not using milimeter gauges like you said you were...your using inches. So, .015 is going to be a large gap, hence the tapping...i dont even know if they make .021mm gauges thats like .0008 inches ....
Hope this helps.

hey thanks ricehornet... I went to the auto shop and picked up the right set... the thing is I had a set with .015 mm... and the wording was really light... so when I was about done with the car.... I found out it wasn't .15... really pissed me off.. but anyhow.. .car still has some tapping sound... but that is normal right???/ not really loud but if i put my ear near the hood I can hear it..
and how often am I suppose to do the valve adjustment???

ok great... then it's right.. .because i can still hear some tapping when I put my ear near my hood.. but a little bit of tapping should be normal right??? or can I really tune it to the point where there's no tap???
A 98 huh, Did it really need an adjustment to begin with? I have a 98 too so I took to the dealer when my odometer was at around 30k miles, the tech guy started my engine, pop the hood, listened to the engine, then told me to go home. He said I don't need an adjustment. He told me to come back when I hear tapping noises.
