i had mine on my rear deck. Worked fine. That was XM, but you'll have less problems with siruis (or should) because of the way their satalites work

And how does that differ from XM?

put the antenna under the dash in your hatch.. i have mine undearneath my dash in my civic w/ integra dash.. no one knows i satelitte radio till i tell them..

as for the different companys i had much better reception with XM in my old car, maybe cause it was on the roof like everyone thought that it had to be when it first came out.. my sirus antenna is hidden under the dash, as long as the antenna doesnt havce any metal above it it will be fine to hide..

xm has more ground repeaters then sirus but sirus is working on upgrading that for the larger citiys..

i install satalitte radios all the time at work so i know its definatly ok to install the antenna under the dash or even on top of the dash if you need, hell the new delphi antennas are the size of a half dollar

a guy at work put his antenna in the air vent that is in the center of the dash.. how often do you use that useless vent of the 92-95 civics??

Only in larger citys, and XM needs more. XM has 2 satalites over the horizon, just like DirecTV. The "angle of attack" decreases as you get into higher latitudes which will cause more "outage" spots. Up here in PA the angle is somewhere around 25-35 degrees or so. shorter objects and such will block the signal alot easier than in say Florida where the angle is more of 60+. Because of this, XM needs more repeaters in big citys, especially up north here, because the buildsing will block the signal. Same with mountains.

Sirius on the other hand uses 3 satalites in a figure 8 orbit over the US, so the angle of attack stays between 50 and 90 degrees pretty much anywhere. Since the signal is more straight down there will be less areas where you can't get the signal.

Ok now I completely forgot where I was going with this...... oh ya, the XM signal gets degraded by land objects alot more than the Sirius, so if having the XM antenna in my car worked, then having a Sirius should work just as well if not better (since the signal isn't already being reduced by land objects)

On all sat radio systems, XM or Sirius, the antenna must have a ground plane to work correctly. With a roof mount or magnetic mount, the ground plane is provided by the metal surface that the ant is stuck to. If a surface mount is stuck to a fiberglass body panel, it must have a piece of metal ( aluminum foil would work) placed under it (on the under side of the panel so you dont see it ). The glass mount and "trucker" style ant make their own ground plane, so they dont need the metal. Metal above the ant will stop the signal (aka roof). If your gonna put it inside your eg, the front dash is the only option (and still have it work halfass). If you put it on top of the dash, put a 16" square piece of foil inside the dash, directly under the ant ( I know it wont fit, just make it as big as you can). If you put it in the dash, just make sure no metal dash structure is above it. It will never work inside the car like it does on your roof. If you hate the look on the roof , you'll have to compromise performance.

Just read the instructions that come with a terk sat radio antenna. I am MECP certified and I have been doing communications installs at work for about 8 years. I'm not saying it wont work without metal under it, I'm just saying it does best if you do it the way it was designed.

it works fine without the metal. it will also penetrate *THIN* layers of metal. Last winter I had to fold down my back seat to put a sled in there, and my antenna fell back into the truck just a little, burried by a snow shovel and a sled, and I still picked up XM. I know alot of truckers who have used the double stick tape or magnetic mount antenna with tape to use on their big rigs, which most use fiberglass shells anymore. I've even thrown the antenna on the ground before it and picked up fine. Also, I had my on my rear deck just chillin by the 3rd tail light... works perfectly. most people I know that work with me or with the same company did this option. I guess they were affraid of someone stealing it... I was just being lazy
