ITs a 2001. I have had this god awful rattle coming from the trunk area. I thought maybe it was the spart tire or the jack not tightned down but it wasn't. I even though ok maybe the seals need some luberication..So i used Zymol seal protectant or whatever the hell it is called. That didn't do it. I really think it's coming from inside the trunk lid itself, kind of like something is hitting against it. Anyone have a suggestions or experience pn what it could be?? This is really ******* annoying.
Have you pulled out the plastic in the rear to see if any of the wires for the wiper motor have come loose or anything? That's all I can think of that's IN the trunk lid itself.
the hatchback cover is what it is. One of the metal clips that holds it in has come loose and it rubbing against the metal part of your hatch, this is exactly what mine was.
HOW TO SOLVE:
Pop your hatch. On the underside of the hatch (interior side) there is a plastic cover, pry it off, don't worry, you won't break anything. Then fix al lthe clips so they are bent properly, re-install and take for a test drive.

Ahh i thought that could be it, if it wasn't in the trunk lid itself. So just pull it right off?
what year is yours?

If it's not the cover that was already mentioned, have someone drive the car while your crawl around in the back and listen to where it's coming from.
It could also be the swaybar endlinks.
Cheers,
Roy

i used to have a rattle that drove me crazy. it turned out to be on the c pillar where the plastic overlaps. double sided tape made it all better.

That's what I was going to suggest, mine did the same thing. Nothing a little black electic tape couldn't fix

The trick is to find out where a clip is and get 1 clip off, slip your hand in there and just pull the thing down as hard as you can, it'll come off pretty easy, nothing will break because its all plastic that's pretty soft. i have a '94

Well I'm not exactly sure where to get them but I do suggest getting Energy Suspension bushings wherever you can find em... but expect to pay a little bit of $$
