Default Squeaking noise from wheel---brake related but source unknown.

I have a squeaking noise coming from I believe is one of the front wheels. It is brake related because when I apply the brakes the noise stops. (so this is not the brake squealing noise when you apply the brakes). No problems braking the car.

I think it may be related to the pad retainers (maybe bent and touching the calipers?). I cleaned the rears yesterday and the noise didn't stop, and today I'm gonna clean the fronts. If that doesn't work I'll try putting new ones in. Any other ideas on what it might be? Anyone else had this problem?

you try checking your brakes it may just be the sensor hitting the rotor??????

Caliper hardware can be tricky. There's a good chance something is rubbing the rotor. I assume your brake pads are not worn to the wear indicators...

i had the same problem. mine started because the dusk cover that goes along the disc was kinda bent. so there would be a small piece of metal rubbing against the disc. try to bend it back on the bottom.

Pads are not worn. In fact, I just put in brand new ones recently. I took off the front dust covers for better cooling on a track. I thought they were the culprits also, but one of the rears has been bent out of its original shape so I'll check that one. I'll also check the sensor. Thanks for the replies.

Make sure the pads slide OK in the holders and the pins the calipers slide on are not stuck. The sound is probably the pads dragging a bit. I have fixed it before by making sure the pads are not too tight in the carrier. They need to slide enough to release after application. The backing plates are usually stamped and often have uneven ends that can be fixed with a little file work. Make sure the pistons and seals are also OK in the calipers.

I finally got time to take a look at it and indeed it was a pad retainer. It was bent and keeping the pad on that side from sliding when the brakes released as you said. I'll have to wait until Monday to go buy a new retainer, meanwhile I'll see if I can straighten this one out. Got dark before I could do it yesterday. Thanks for all the replies.
