I've got an 87 4wd beast

Basically, anything that goes in a EF CRX, Hback or Sedan will work in a wagon...some setups will lose the 4wd though.

consult these guys for model specific help:

You can only swap in a D-series if you want to keep the AWD since the AWD tranny only bolts to D-series. And the engine in that AWD Wagon looks like a Carb'd DOHC ZC.

Not to split hairs, but the "only" way? Of all the wild hair in the *** ideas left in the Honda community, I think the most reasonable place to find a B-series/CRV drivetrain retrofit would be an old 4wd wagon.
The RT4wd tranny is rather particular about which D-series motor it bolts to...definately not all of them.

Yeah dude, you can put a ZC in there because it is a D series block. There were a few ZC 4WD's actually made. My friend has an 89 Civic wagon RT4WD with a D16A6 and a JRSC on it. Tires don't even chirp.

I think you could try the transmission from a CRV because it bolts up to B series and see if the old drive shaft will mate up to the new CRV trans.

Only the ZC will fit, somewhat easily. I guess if you are captain fabricator, you could swap in the CRV awd & tranny, & a B-series, but it would definitely not be easy or cheap.

I have a 4wd wagon. I live in Bellingham. It kicks *** for driving to Mt. Baker. I
have studded snows, and pass SUVs left & right in the snow.

I was considering a ZC....but was worried about replacement parts, & poor reliabilaty. It's not much more power than the d16a6 that's stock...130hp vs 108.

I'm turboing my wagon. For hill climbing, the turbo should kickass. I have most of the stuff I need, just need an oil drain flange & line, asst coolant lines, & need to get my intercooler modified. I also need to put in a new clutch & CV joint first. I also need to put the engine in my pathfinder back together again. I should have it boosted by winter-time.

The 4wd system ain't to strong and been know to have alot of problems and putting more power to it won't help. But more power to yah and thought of the same thing. Maybe if I can find one cheap I'll try the zc swap into it. Also take a look at the rear axles, their like toothpicks and let alone will tell you something. Best of luck and you won't know until you try it.

The 4wd system is as reliable as the rest of the car.
The system takes power just fine...there is a small community of wagon enthusiasts, some who have significantly more power than stock. If you can avoid four wheel burnout drag launches it will hold up just fine.
The rear axles are proportionate to the size and weight of the vehicle. Would I take it for serious off-roading? No. But it works great for wet and snow, which is what it was designed for.

i have one, its got a d15b sohc vtec in it and lightweight flywheel, great stuff though. It tears up the snow and ice all the time, i never have a problem. I just have to put the tranny shield back on

If their thinking about dropping in something bigger or stronger they probably have more than cruising in the snow or on ice *cough street or drag racing cough* hell any type of racing for that matter that rear diff won;t last long. Why do you think the most it ever came with a si engine in the later wagons. Yah it's good for what it came with and maybe some simple bolt-ons but anything major expect some problems. 4wd burnouts who could resist on a civic. BOOM!
