Default Power down and top end dies

Need help once again guys.

I had a Spoon Header fitted a while ago and to test the power I redlined the car, in the first 4 gears. Whilst testing I was doing about 7k in 3rd gear when the power died for a brief moment before picking back and dying again at a similar spot in the rev range. At first I thought this was the clutch slipping but thinking about it the revs drop as well at the power so it wasn’t that.

I posted here for help a few weeks ago and someone suggested it might be fueling. I took the car to the rolling road on Saturday and the guy said it wasn’t fueling said if anything the car was getting too much fuel, we made some adjustments through a V-AFC but this made no difference, the power dies at 7k now.

The maximum power was 140whp I was totally disappointed by this, anyway, we lowered the VTEC Point and this seemed to move the spot where the power dies, I lowered the VTEC point to 5000 revs but it was no good the power was still dying out.

Could the VTEC Controller be faulty?, the guy suggested running the car without the APEXI but the fact it’s soldered on doesn’t help, maybe someone sells a by-pass harness or something so I can run the car without the V-AFC for a while?

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I need help on this one.

leave your vtec alone and have your compression checked

if compression is wrong wouldnt be power loss throughout all the rev range?

I'd either verify your VAFC is hooked up correctly and no wires are loose anywhere or remove it completely and see how the car runs. The VAFC's have a history of causing problems when a wire gets loose or becomes disconnected.

I will check this weekend. Also going for a compression test. Ecu will be stripped and ran on it's own next week.

tell me about it , but that happens to me with my old *** fields vtec controller
but what happens the car dies no matter what rpms . IMO if the vafc is the same as the fields just with better improvements , i think the problem may be something else . check your plugs also that can attend to do that . if it gets even worse and starts to do it on your lower rpms and can be also the distributor . the reason i say this , cause it happen to me a while ago ....

It was doing this before I had the service last week, plugs were new and gapped ok, I did this myself, HT leads were upgraded but it was still the same. Now that you talking about this happening at low end I (think I might anyway) getting a rumble about 1-2k not like before when you let off the clutch and the revs drop a little before picking up, it's like the car was about to stall but not. Damn this ain;t good, I want my car back.

if you vacuum pressure is unstable or your idle is bad, I suspect that you are losing compression. when I blew my pistons last year, my brake pedal vibrated badly, the vac pressure was unstable, and it always sounded like it wanted to stall....but when i got on the gas, it felt normal....

I got the sheet but no pic of it.

I had a compression test done and it was 180-psi 12:1 so it's all normal.

I checked the wire on the V-AFC and this seemed to fix it. I sqeezed the wires where the joins were, either that or a ecu reset done the trick when I disconnected the battery.

I will test it again tonight I guess as I only had chance to redline it about 4 times, I will try it again to be sure.

Thanks for the imput guys

Sorry guys! I guess it didn't fix it, I soon as I got in 4th gear it did the same thing, it seems wierd that 3rd gear was ok for a bit and as soon as I can't do it in 4th I can't do it in 3rd either.

Is this something to do with timing? can someone tell me why I have 190 LBs of torqure at 4-5k where at the factory on is about 140LBs, I don;t mind the torque but I can't get the fulll power form the car.

Could belt slippage put the timing out of sync?
