Default hesitation/ tach flippin out problem

when im driving, hot or cold, in any gear, above 3k rpm i get misfires and my tach jumps all over. car is a 91 civic with a mini me swap on the 1.5 b2 block. computer hasnt thrown any codes since i cleared it a day ago. before that it was flashing 1 and 9. before this the car died on the street and threw a code 15. i cleaned off the terminals for the coil and the problem seemed to go away. now its back after i hit some bumps. im thinkin loose connection, fuel filter, or coil. any other suggestions?

Sounds like the Distributor is fucked. THats exactly what happened when mine went out. It wouldnt go past 4k. Right when it got to 4k, the needle would jump around and the car would sputter. Youll need a new Dist.

alright. thats the best scenario because i got another dist. sitting in my room and as soon as i get my conversion harness back the problem should be solved or changed. how long do you think i have until my distributor doesnt work at all. im gonna squeeze every last drop of life from it.

thats up to the distributor. it might be dead right now, or it might last for another 3 months. you never know

If the ground at the thermostat is loose it will cause the same symptoms.

like sloorex said, check the connections in the distributor, they have been known to come loose.

most likely the ignitor or coil but i'd guess ignitor since they're much more common.

definitely a loose connection....... same thing happend to me when i went over some railroad tracks......... 1 main terminal popped loose and my whole car sputtered and shut off......... popped my cap of and re-tightened it and i was off.........

im glad i always have my tool box with me.......

I've had the same problem in my 90 DX (stock), cannot figure it out. I've put in 2 distributors now, ignitor is new, coil is new, no loose wires, ground @ thermostat is fine, all other grounds good, car doesn't miss though. I thought I figured it out one day when my friend tapped the starter with the power on and the tach jumped, changed that ground and still have the same problem. I pulled the starter and cleaned the trans case to ensure a good ground. The SI cluster is fine and the dash grounds are good..... ECU??

its the ignitor. the problem can be caused by not just a loose connection at the terminals, but also internally. replace the ignitor (with honda oem), the problem will go away. how do i know? i just had the same problems and replaced the ignitor from my spare disitrbutor and its all good now.
