Default Low Idle RPM and Low Oil Pressure - A Problem?

OK, my motor (jdm b18c running CR of 11.8:1) idles smoothly at about 500 rpm and the oil press goes to about 10 and triggers the idiot oil press light on the dashboard - is this a problem? I know I should bump it up to about 7-800 but it is with the lights and power accessories off......

So if the oil pump can barely keep up at 500, why don't you bump it up to 750? Sounds like a real easy fix, I can't think of a good reason not to do that.

yea, that does sound dumb - actually what i was saying is that idle in daytime is 7-800 rpm and with the lights on at nite it drops to like 480 or so with intermittant low oil press. prolly turn it up to like 1100 if it will hold steady there

What is the pressure at 3000 RPM? 50-60 PSI? If you cant maintain 20 PSI at idle, no matter the RPM, then i would be looking at my main bearings or oil pump. One or the other or both are worn sufficiently to not allow the oil pressure to be maintained. But if you want a quick fix then up the idle and change to a higher viscosity oil and wait till it gets bad enough to spin a main bearing and trash the whole motor when the rod goes through the side of the block!!!!! Get my drift?

well, i was having a prob with excess fuel dump and replaced the o2 sensors which took care of everything...they may have been poisoned by too much fuel in dyno testing....it idles at 860 rpm and at 790 rpm with the lights on now, and oil press at 35 psi

I'm having this same problem with my 1990 prelude si, it only flickers on at idle and the O2 sensors are supposedly good, I'm not getting any trouble codes for it. Let me know if you got trouble codes for bad O2 sensors.. in the meantime I'm pulling my oil pan off and checking for excess wear and clean the oil pickup screen.

I havent made any changes to the injectors at all or anything for that matter.. I think I'm going to plug a pressure gauge into it and see what its at, then maybe replace the sensor. I got the oil pan removed and everything looks good in there, not any signs of excess wear at all... so thats good to know. Hopefully the pump isnt bad

not that you need anybody to tell you, but just be patient...how many miles on that mug? do you have an oil press gauge on that - i just t'd mine off the block and ran it through the firewall with the other lines...
