It's a decent unit.

My friend has the 8400 mp premier unit, which is pretty much the same thing: he likes it.

I think this unit can be had for around 300-ish (ebay) maybe, but 250? I dunno... seems like a great deal at 250!

She probably knew someone at Best Buy because the employees get a HUGE discount on car audio sh*t or the person just hooked her up with and employee discount.

Only problem that I see with the 8-Series Pioneer is the ribbon cable behind the motorized face plate that goes out after time. Just like it used to on the DEX-P1R.

Other then that, excellent stereo!

how much time, average, does it take for it to go out?

Hard to say, I've seen the DEX-P1R go out after about 1-1/2 years. I've once seen the DEH-P840 go out in 3 months. Thats really rare but it'll eventually happen. Its not a big problem. It is a known issue and most authorized repair centers have the ribbon cables in stock. Its just the down time and inconvenience of it all.

Just for that, I'd have to recommend getting the Pioneer Premier model instead. Like the DEH-P850MP. All Premier models come with a standard 2 year parts and labor warranty.

I've been a happy Pioneer head unit owner for quite awhile. I've had the DEH 4000 and the DEH 4300...and I'm looking into their mobile video head unit for my next headunit upgrade. Having a young daughter (7 months right now...she'll "need" the distraction soon...) kind of "requires" it.

she stole it! jk . I got my DEH-P750MP a few weeks ago for $250. It's an awesome deck. Premier makes good quality decks better than the Pioneer ones. The OEL screen kicks *** too, you can still see it very clearly even in direct sunlight, it's very bright.

If you're gonna get an in-dash motorized unit, stay away from the Pioneer AVH-P7490 (can't remember the exact model number right now but I think this is right). The screen is known to have color saturation problems and will turn like blueish and redish. If you have this problem and you have the original warranty, sometimes, they'll upgrade you to the new $2400.00 touch screen 7500 model. That's a major !

had the 8400mp and was pretty satisfied with it. some stall **** that annoyed me:

time it takes to read mp3's. 3~5 secs.
cant put in large sodas when face is down (integra)
wish they came in black
