Tire tech - Is this safe?
AVS-i in 215/45/17. Was in the midst of grilling out, and happened to spy something shiny in the tread of driver's rear tire. Though it was a rock at first, but...

Have no idea how long it's been in there. Odds are good I picked it up this weekend - was on a couple of gravel driveways. The tire is holding air fine - no leakage as of yet
So keep driving on it, yank the spike and see what happens, or get it attended to ASAP? Never gotten something like this in a tire before.

Yank it and plug it with a plug kit..
Should be fine if the plug holds the air and you aren't doing any high speed or roadcourse type stuff.
I got a 5" nail stuck in my tire a bunch of years back. We pulled it, plugged it and I got about 20,000 more miles on the tire. Of course it was on the family truckster and never near pushing any limits.
Good luck,
PS if you can't plug it right away, just use a can of fix-o-flat and leave the nail in. Your tire mounting guy will hate you but, the tire will hold air.
Zyg is correct, if you pull it, be ready to patch it. The kit I would think would be best would be a balloon type patch which requires dismounting the tire. Or you could use one of those thread the rubber plug type.

Thanks, kids.
Zyg, those tires *might* have 8k miles on them. Ten k at the most. Taken off in the winter, and rotated every oil change when they're on. I paid $57 each - trying to get my money's worth
Splat, who should have bought three sets instead of one

I still have a set of them that were Free but, have nowhere near that much tread left on them. I use 'em for winter storage.

Yea if you have a Discount Tire by you they should fix it for free. When they fix it, they take the tire of the wheel and plug it, then patch it on the inside. Its a much better fix then you can do at home, plus its free

i would get that fixed asap, if you are driving(fast or not) and that rod moves it will be an instant blowout. you could lose control.
go to a tire shop and pay them 20$ to dismount the tire and fix it. i seriously cant believe you would even post asking for opions on this.

Blech.
I was posting because of the angle of the puncture. Any time I've had a piece of something in a tire, it's gone flat within hours. Which makes me think that there's a chance this thing didn't puncture the carcass. I posted here, because I know several people on this board personally that have worn AVS-i's down to the cords. Therefore, they might have an idea on how thick the tread is, and my odds to as whether or not my tire has been severely compromised or not.
But yeah, I'll probably yank it out tomorrow and see what happens. Patch if necessary. Although I'll probably have to pay more due to the wheel/tire size

agreed, I used to do tires at Sears and they had the Plug-patch combo. Holds like a champ. Just a plug is a shitty fix. Good for dads 205/75/15's on the Dodge Caravan.
http://www.mz3.net/articles/156.html <=== read on. Sears still does these. 12 bucks or so.

sorry to sound this way but the angle of the puncture doesnt seem to be very important, you dont know how long the shard is and if you run over a rock, crack, pothole ect and it comes in contact with the metal it will push it further... in my mind it is not if, it is more a question of when the tire will deflate.
better to get it over with now than have to deal with it later

Nah, the only way your tire would be compromised was if you happened to lose more air, and drive a short way almost flat. In some cases, the rim's inner bead can cause the inside wall to, for lack of a better way to describe it, flake or grind off material. Then the tire is basically dead. Good thing you've decided to fix that right away. If you want to save money, another place that does free flat/puncture repairs is America's Tire Co., which is also associated with Discount Tire.

What are those other holes in the tread? I've never seen a tread pattern with what looks like drilled holes in them.

Dunno. That's just what they look like. AVS Intermediates.
