Default blue smoke every now and then.

OK yes I do know what blue smoke means. Burning oil. Ok here's the problem though. I am being told that because my cat is burnt it is creating so much backpressure I am getting blow by and that is what is causing the blue smoke. I get no smoke at idle and at constant speeds. I get alot of smoke when the car has been warmed up and I press the the gas 50% down. After a little while of driving though it stops smoking, atleast from what I can see in my rear view mirror. I am getting a new cat and header Monday. Anyone have any ideas on this? I am begining to think my friend is BSing me and it is just bad rings, that he installed. Recap...blue smoke when accelerating hard, no smoke when idling, no smoke when accelerating lightly. Thanx everyone.

yeah my car does the same thing only smokes when you get on it but how does youre car run i my car runs like nothing is wrong with it just smokes but anywayz go have a compression test done and see wat that says and if the #s are good then try a leakdown cause it could be bad valve seals...

Car runs strong. Compression test is 195 200 200 215. 1-4cyl. A leakdown will be my next step if infact the new cat/header setup doesn't solve the problem. Keep the input coming guys I need more knowledge on this damn thing I wanna get it running good, I hate that ghetto fabulous feeling I get when I accelerate and blue smoke pours from my 4 year old car.

Aleakdown will not tell you if the valve seals are bad the motor is at TDC when test is performed and valves(unless bent or bad valve job) are sealed. If you perform a leakdown and hear the air leaking from the exhast pipe or the int.mani. the valve job is bad or valves are bent,if the rings are bad the air will leak into the crankcase and into the valve cover area.

Thanx for the info man. How can I tell if my valve seals are crap though? BTW as some background on this situation. I recently had my head rebuilt, new valve seats, guides, seals, itr cams, valves, springs, retainers. I also had the rod bearings changed as well as the rings done at the same time. it never smoked while I was breaking in the engine. It only recently started to smoke during hard acceleration. Approx 1500miles on it now. Now he is telling me that changing the cat will solve the problem.

i dont know man did it smoke before yoou did all the work and did you do a overbore and hone the block or even hone the block when you put in the new rings i believe you can have good compression and still get iol past the oil retention ring so i dont...

Its odd that you say the car didnt smoke during break in, usually it will smoke like nobodys business the first couple miles then get progessively less as the rings seat. Sounds like the guy messed up your rings not allowing them to seat properly, perhaps clearances were too tight so no smoke at first but then they wore unevenly? How did you break in the engine? My 2 cents = rings.

Break in is Key. How did you do it and How often was the oil changed during the break in process?

I have never heard the thing about the CAT causins this either, but then might just be something i have never heard before.

Break was no vtec for 500 miles. Variable speeds for approx 800 miles. I would put a load on the engine then take my foot off the gas and let it cruise. Oil was changed at 10 miles, 250 miles, and that's it so far. Yes I feel it is strange also that it didn't smoke at all at first and now it smokes. Mind you it doesn't always smoke. It smokes only when it has cooled down and just as it is warming back up it will smoke while accelarating, then it will stop.

That would be a busted seal that is causing the oil in the spark plug that could be why you are burning oil
