Default Will the OEM DIN holder work with a new deck? 97 ITR

Will the stock DIN holder in my '97 ITR accept a new normal sized CD deck? It appears the be the same thing as the DIN kit you can buy from the audio store, but I want to make sure before attempting.

Here are some pics if you need visual aid:

I'm pretty sure you need the kit, because a normal sized CD player would have some empty space above and below it otherwise.. That and they may not bolt directly into the OEM radio frame.

Just buy the kit..

Hmm...Ok.

I just think that it looks very similar to the aftermarket DIN kit you can buy.

Has anyone actually tried using the OEM DIN unit for an aftermarket deck?

If you're on a tight budget, yes it fits, but the kit makes it look a million times better and gives the headunit more support and allows it to stay in better

See Jason's post in the ITR forum.. He has a pic of it like that.. You can see the bare metal of the radio frame showing through.. If you care about looks, buy the kit.. if you could care less what it looks like, then don't.. You'll probably need a harness for the connection either way though..

I already have a harness. When I bought everything I figured that the OEM DIN holder would allow proper fitting for my new deck, but before I started the installation I wanted to confirm here first.

Some head units, like my Alpine, is not wide enough to fit in the spot, with a dash kit i have about 1/2 inch on both sides... tech guys have said it can be done, but with a little custom rigging.

I haven't done an ITR yet, but based off of every other honda, the factory pocket actually mounts to the factory radio in some fashion or another. In my prelude it's little clips at the front area of the pocket/radio. In accords you really need the kit with the way the pocket mounts, otherwise it looks really ghetto.

depending on the deck... yes.

Here is my Nakamichi CD-45z:

I had many shops tell me I could NOT install an aftermarket deck without a plastic adapter... but I was determined

I absolutely HATED the look/feel of the aftermarket "adapter" kits.. grainy cheap plastic compared to the stock plastic.. So i took my time and made some brakects to hold up the deck while keeping the plastic tray from moving around..

It took some time, but put your mind to it and it'll turn out great.. I have stereo installers asking me how I did it every time they look at it..

Good luck!

-Alex

My alpine worked fine. I also used the stock cd tray, and no aftermarket kits.
