Default does cam gears has to be set at 0 to do valve adjustment?

my head is milled .030 and the block has been deck, both of my cam gears is advanced.. my machine shop guy said cam timing has nothing to do with setting the valve lash.. is that tru?? tia

Absolutely true, setting the valve lash has nothing to do with cam gear settings. As long as the cams base circle is level with the rocker you can do the adjustment. Ignore the fact that I am a nOOb on this forum.
