Things to look for in used ITR
do a carfax on it. just wondering, do you know what makes an ITR an ITR? check for 5 lug and other things. look at the engine, make sure there's no oil leaking from anywhere or any other fluids. if you can or know a good honda mechanic, bring him/her.
Check the engine code and tranny.
Type R motor= b18c5
On the tranny you will see the letters stamped "LSD" another way you can tell is if you look at the numbers and letters on it next to the stamped letters. The last 3 characters would read "s80" or the other way around i might be wrong.
Basic stuff would be 5 lug conversion, red valve cover, stock strut bar, ABS braking, spoiler, door panels, rear disc brakes, lighted up amber gauge cluster and clock and the red stiching on the interior.

Everyone and their brother has a red valve cover, etc. from an ITR.
The real problem isn't fakes, but whether or not the previous owner beat the crap out of the car with stuff like blowers, turbo, nitrous or infrequent/poor mechanical work.

It took me a few months to find the right R. Definitely have it checked out by a mechanic or someone of that nature. I had one lined up for a great price, and looked like a killer deal on autotrader... but i had it looked at and it ended up being in 2 accidents, also with the motor being blown and rebuilt incorrectly. Also, try to stay away from heavily modifed ones, those are usualy the more abused. I love when guys have like 10k in mods, but say its "never been raced or abused"... its like putting on a turbo kit and never revving above 4k
There shouldn't be any valve clicking on the real low mileage R's...no grinds or anything in the tranny..
I got really lucky, found a 2000 ITR with 20k on it for 18,000...perfect condition...not a ding on it...and the guy changed the oil every 2000 miles and used Amsoil....found it in a week too...I was very lucky...
He did AutoX it a few times, but that's what it was made for...I'll be autoXing for the first time with my R this weekend.

Don't jump on the 1st R you see. I almost did that, and my gf stopped me cuz she recognized that it was a piece of **** that had been in an accident. There are a few shops in Toronto that are selling insurance write-offs.
Check for tranny grinds, particularly 2-3, AC, brake pulsating. Also check to see what mods the previous owner had, e.g. Apexi VAFC (involves splicing into existing ECU, may damage ECU when removing Apexi, as I found out).
I also found out later (to my advantage, but scary) that Honda replaced the motor/tranny right before I got the car. Check if VINs on motor match car.
