Default just picked up a 89' DX hb, good idea?

hey, I just picked up a 89' DX HB for $100, has bad motor and bad axles. I have in my posession a 89' CRX HF motor and trans. My plan is to leave my 92' hb at the house and turn this into a daily. The car really needs paint, but oh well, interior kinda sucks but can live with it. Was curious if it was worth my time to put this motor in the car and reuse the dual point ingnition off the bum motor and have like a 60hp beater hoping to get like 40+ mpg back and forth to work since I drive 85miles round trip to work. I personally can't see how this motor albeit underpowered shouldn't serve its purpose very well. I have been told that I should use the multi-point FI and convert it, that is something i never have done, gonna try and do some research to see how hard that might be. What ya guys think? good deal?

BTW: I am not sure it is an 89' that is what the lady tells me it is. It looks like a 90 to be honest with you. The man who owns it is a long distance truck driver, he will return to town on monday night, paperwork, to be completed tuesday.

UPDATE, it is actually a 91' here it is:

Dude an HF motor with DPFI would have like 30hp. It would do 0-60 in about 10 minutes. If you put in the HF at least make the car MPFI.

got the car to my shop. found out it is a 4spd. this normal? I assumed (I know shame on me) they were all 5spds. BTW, I sign the title over next tuesday, it is in the ladies husbands name and he is a long distance truck driver getting in mon night. She didn't know where the title was so I am going off her knowledge that it is a 89' dx. anybody got a link to the different years, specs, options on ef's?

You should probably switch to MPFI if you can get the intake manifold and ecu easily (or already have it). Anyway the 4 speed hatch is a standard, which is the lowest model. It should have no center console and also vinyl seats. The right side mirror and radio were both options, so it may or may not have those. If you are putting in the HF engine, put the HF transaxle into it also. You can use the regular standard axles to put it in, or the HF ones if you have them laying around. You cannot use DX or Si axles without changing hubs, though.

Yeah, that car would be sooper-weak. You can pick up an a6 for next to nothing with mpfi. I'd go that route If I were you.

No

You sir, have an STD. No, not that kind of STD, but an STD hatchback. That is, it's not a DX. The DX had a 5-speed, only the STD came with a 4 speed manual tranny

a6 plus Si tranny, you will have a stronger motor, 5 speeds, and still easily over 30 mpg. You can even go SOHC VTEC or SOHC ZC and get great gas mileage, though the swaps to those are a bit more involved. But cheap motors, with any of those 3 options!

Well for one I know that it would be very weak. Remember i said it would be my daily driver. It is good to know that I got the standard hb.......my hopes is to use the hf motor long enough that I can take some parts I have laying around and do this: https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=401854

that is the plan as of right now

Dude you got ******* hosed. I got a '90 DX hatch for $100 and it runs great. It just needed an ignitor and I had a distributor sitting in my garage. You got ripped. Just kidding, looks like a pretty good buy for $100. Oh like the others stated it is a STD, DXes had a red panel between the tails, rear wiper, another gear, and a little plastic console like piece of **** around the shifter.

Yeah I have figured that out. luckily, I have found 2 seats for it off a trade. and found a wrecked dx in a salvage yard and I am gonna pick up the console pieces. Call me crazy, but I want a console there, kinda completes the car a bit. now to see if it will spin a wheel when I put it back together................lol

i just posted a thread like this a few days ago...

i didn't know what kind of hatch i bought, but it turns out it's an STD also.

you're lucky though... i have tan/brown interior. looks like hell.

the engine has 110k miles on it, so i'm happy with that.

you should give the car a 'rattle can' paint job... that's what i'm doing.

Looks like mine! Excpet mines slammed and has tinted windows and a huge fart tip. You got a good deal for that car. And about it needing paint, every red 91 Honda needs paint. Mine looks pink almost when its wet in the sun. Haha. Yeah dude, I think you should just keep that engine. I mean, if its just for gas mileage like you say. Have fun with it.
