GrassRoots Motorsports just did a comparison between 3 different race tires (Yokohamas, Toyos, and Hankooks) in their magazine and the Hankook seemed to fair pretty well against the other two. I think, as far as I can remember right now, that there were just some differences on the breaking points in cornering but once you got used to it, they were quite competant.

and you SHOULD blame the damn french for that. It is the fashionable thing to do these days.
And don't forget to order your freedom fries at the drive-through as well. Oh, wait, them are called "chips" ain't they?
Sebastien - who blames the french for most of all that is wrong in the world since he has become an american citizen. I used to blame the brits...
PS: did you find a house Alex?

then, if you are Scottish, we may share common ancestors...
back on topic, while I have not tried the Hankooks but read the GRM articles, there is something slightly disquieting about a company that relies heavily on japanese anime look-alike characters in its advertising. I just have a hard time taking them seriously. Maybe I am just prejudiced...

Did you guys hear about the new Kumho tire? It looks like a full slick, with a couple of tiny grooves. Supposedly they are going after the Hoosier market with it...
Matt
Matt
yes that looks very slick-ish. I wonder if they are into the Production GT ranks with that.
what happened to this new hoosier also?
quite frankly Id like to see a price war between hoosier, kumho, toyo and hanKOOK

Getting back on topic...
Joel Lipperini is having a tremendous amount of success with the HanKOOK tires this year. Sportscar has him picked for 2nd at the Runoffs.
Edit: Don't know if it has anything to do with a soft-cushy SSC Civic suspension vs. the Spec Miata coilovers, but Joel has nothing but good things to say (to me at least) about his tires. Check out my sig for his latest race results. National races aren't won with crap components.

As a Pro Spec Miata racer...I have some experience with the Hankook tires....I will bite my lip at this time about this tire....I am still studying what it will do and does.
One observation though about the sidewall stiffness compared to the Toyo and Kuhmo. It is a simple test that can be performed in your garage.
Put the same amount of air pressure in the tires.....jack one side of the car up and notice the lack of stiffness in the HanKOOK tire.....another test: Let the air out of the HanKOOK tire and notice if the sidewall supports the car. Does the rim support the car?
Please post your observations here....Thank you...

I would also!
This 'price war' maybe only around the corner..... from the rumors I've heard.
Competition between manufactures only can improve the breed.
With the introduction of the new Hankooks, Hoosier 04's, and the 'new' Kumho, why would any non-spec series want to be racing on a spec tire? Why get locked into a spec situation when so much is happening in the industry?
Makes no sense.
I digress.
John- If I wanted spec, I'd be racing SRF.

Finally, to complete the test, do the same thing with any racing slick, to complete the data set.
Damn good question there, John.

We've been racing on an older model Hankook in Canada for years (in fact, I'm still using one old set these days). It was called the Z2000. It was the spec tire for many seires. It's sort of a half-hearted R-compound, with a treadwear of 80 and very limited sizes available (nothing bigger than 195-50-15). They were dirt cheap though, about 30% less than Toyo. Also, you could get a whole season of racing from about 6 tires. In that sense, Hankook already has credibility here in race circles, but not as a manufacturer of the BEST tire.
Looks like they may become a good choice for club drivers. There was I think a spec miata team running them at the Kuhmo 12 hour at homestead this year. I never did get a chance to ask them if they liked them.
