My CRX does the same thing. Starts rattling around 3200 RPMs and stops at like 3400. I think it's coming from where the downpipe meets the cat. My heatshield is removed and it didn't make a difference.
i have a similar problem and at the same rpms. but when i disconected the cat i still had the sound. then my friend noticed i had a couple inches of play in my timing belt and the noise would come from the head somewhere as the belt slapped at 3k. may not be your problem but is possible. by the way put on a kitchen oven mit and squeeze the exhaust shields while it is on a lift of something safe and rev it up or have your buddy get in the car and rev it.
hey guys...i KNOW WHAT THIS ONE IS>......weee
My GS-R starts rattleing at around 3200 and up to around 3700rpms. I researched this for a few days on the net, and noticed that many people were having the same problems.
I found people talking about how the factory headers, have like a dual type pipe or something like that, where there is the outside pipeing, (not the heat sheild) and then like an inner thin metal, or coating or something like that.
I took my car into an exhaust shop, to have a custom exhaust, and high flow cat put on, and this is what happened.
im standing under the car, next to the exhaust guy, he removes the old cat, and peices of metal, and flakes drop outta the header....seems that the inside coating or piping or whatever the hell it is, erouds/rust/breaksdown, really easy, which causes those peices of metal to sit down there, just ahead of the cat.
At that rpm, the motor creates a lil shake for some reason, and rattles those peices.....
That may not be everyones problem, but that was mine, and i have since noticed alot of people getting it fixed, from takeing care of that exact problem.
