Default Is there a way to loosen the brake shoes from outside the drum?

Through wear and neglect, my brake shoes have created a little groove indent within the drums and i cannot pull off the drums... is there a way to loosen the shoes so that they retract towards the inner circle of the drum and not the outer as they seem to be sitting within the groove they created from rubbing.

I would like to know if there is a safe way to do this or jus pull with all i've got!?

Remove the plug in the backing plate and use a screwdrive to turn the adjuster.
