Default temperature sending unit?

I haven't started my car in days, but my fan still kicks on every now and again and my batt. is always toast. Is that most likely the TSU? Or can there be another cause?

How about the fan switch? I thought the TSU was the sender for the gauge...

Anyway, the fan switch just closes a circuit to ground. The switch might be bad, and it's closing randomly when it wants to. Or maybe the wire has some bare spots and once in awhile it's touching ground. Unplug the fan switch & see if it still does it.
