Default Shift Linkage Issue(s) - Pics Included.

** This might not be 56K friendly.

Let me first explain my setup. I have a 88 CRX HF with a JDM B16A SiR II block with a YS1 (B17A) cable Transmission, B16A2 (99-00 Civic SI) head. The motor is built oil pan up, with new rings, bearings, headgasket, everything replaced OEM and wired to OBD I.

I first had this problem when I decided to try a different shift linkage setup out, which was AzRacing Shift Linkage with my Place Racing Mounts. The funny thing is, only my DC Sports Short Shifter (for 99-00 Civic SI) would only work, but always would "sit" to the upper right a tad, instead of right in the middle. Which would result in 3rd gear grinds, and sometimes 4th gear, and 5th gear would stick in and be very hard to take out.

So I ditched the AzRacing Linkage, after I decided to experiment with it. Which I hacked it to ****, and it really didn't work at all. So I decided to bite the bullet, and do it right, so I ordered a Hasport Shift Linkage(Thanks JDMhondaParts).

I toss the Short shifter in with the Hasport to see how it felt. It actually felt great, but it would STILL lean towards the upper right a bit for some reason, altho it didn't grind, and shifted ALOT smoother than the AzRacing Linkage, it still wasn't centered.

So I dropped the Linkage, tossed my OEM CRX Shifter in to see how it feels with the Hasport Linkage... Which of course was the same result, but 5th gear is really hard to find, as is reverse. Which didn't happen with the Short shifter, WTF!

So I'm really ******' stumped, and have turned to seek help. This is real annoying, I'm using brand new urathane(sp? ;p) bushings. I have some pictures, if anyone can figure out why the Shifter isn't centered in the joint, which it should be.

P.S - Revs have been matched to each gear to check syncros, and they are 100% perfectly fine.

Thanks for your time.

Regards,
James

Since you tried two linkages with the same result, I would suspect engine placement is possibly too far forward for the linkage. Does anyone you know have a place racing linkage you could compare? I have the hasport mounts and hasport linkage and it fits great. With place mounts, use place linkage? Have not heard of this before, most peeps mix and match linkage and mounts as you have.

Yeah, someone else must have this setup too. Altho, Place Racing engine position is exactly the same as Hasport as my understanding. I mean, the overall length is perfectly fine, it's the shifter tilts to the upper right corner.

The solution I think would be to figure out why it would move to the upper right corner?

If I remember correctly, the AZ company is a knockoff of hasport. They both are close in spec. Also, back in the day I thought that Hasport was using SiR linkages. The place location was different back then and you couldnt really use the two together.

But then again, it has been about 2-3 yrs since I dipped my fingers in the EF pot.

Nice setup. The place racing mounts DO NOT sit the same as the HASport kit. You've gotta use the same brand linkage with the same mounts.Yet the place racing linkage can suck *****.It got super loose on me to the point which i'd be in gear and the shifter would just wobble so far that it'd hit my leg than my passangers. It was embarrassing.Than i switched to a hasport linkage and it sat too far forward. And it still does. But its solid as a rock and im happy with it.If it aint broke.....dont fix it.

Mikey - So your running Place Racing mounts with Hasport linkage now? And you don't have this problem? I don't mind about the shifter being positioned more forward, I just want more clean smoother "straight" shifts. That's all. As you can see the shifter clearly isn't sitting even.

Yep...place racing mounts with a hasport linkage. It does sit a bit forward.....just just a notch towards the right.Yet,she shifts like a dream.I just ended up getting used to it and settling it for the satisfaction of no more grinds.Im running the same skunk2 shifter/**** that i was running on my place linkage.

I would go get the matching Place linkage and be done with it.

thats bad placement due to the fact of the mounts. from what i heard the place racing mounts sits the engine closer to the front of the car. i had the same problem with my b20vtec. i used copies of places mounts and had the same results with the linkage and where it sat. the best mounts from what i heard are hasport or hcp. just my 2 cents.

also what seats are those.

What bracket do you have on the drivers side of the engine? It looks like the OBD 1 style, you should be using a 90-93 integra or 1st gen B16A.

im using place racing mounts, and the has port linkage,

it doesnt sit forward to me but it does sit a little bit to the right, :shrug i had the stock shifter and it was fine but when i was actually racing i would have trouble getting it into gear so i switched to a nuespeed shorty and i havent had any problems since, make sure you didnt put your shifter in backwards if its sitting to far forward, alot of people put it in the wrong way.

i just lived with it, its not bad and i kind of like it, the gears feel really close and short.

I'm not talking about the engine mount, I'm talking about the bracket that bolts to the block and the mount.

I got place racing mounts and linkage (bought the car that way).. at least in the CRx they all sit fine, and shift excellent.

I'm swapping that drivetrain to the hatch, assume it will be the same there, too.

Just an update...

Note to self: Bitch Pin DOES serve a proper point.

Still sits to the right a tad, but I added the bitch pin yesterday along with the DC SS, and everything is perfect now. Knock on wood.

I've had the same problem,

If it's just a bit to the right, you'll get used to.
What you have to do is bent the top linkage, if you're sitting in your seat, the rear of that bar has to be in the direction of the rear L corner a little, this straighten mine out.
I made my own adjustable ones. Best thing to do IMHO.

Mine has the exact same problem! Im going to have some material added to it today and see where that places the shifter... Cause where the linkage comes into the car its too short and wont fit properly like in the first few pics... Then my linkage would come out of the rubber peice in the back causing my linkage to fall and rest on the exhuast....
